Nautor Swan, a mix of tradition and high technology
Hundreds of years of Finnish nautical tradition, Nautor Swan was born out of inspiration. Despite the harsh environment around the small town of Pietarsaari, where temperatures can drop as low as -30 degrees Celsius in the depths of winter and the sea can be frozen for up to five months of the year, Pekka Koskenkyla, its founder, had the vision to start producing high-quality, high-performance sailboats made for those who are passionate about cruising and racing, seeking contact with the water and nature.
The world’s most beloved sailboats
Since 1966, Nautor Swan has prided itself on the unparalleled quality in the production of the world’s best-loved sailboats, a fully integrated in-house construction process, from design to the smallest details and final testing before delivery of each yacht to its owners.
Today, the advanced Boatbuilding Technology Center, known as BTC, marks the line of the company’s expansion process. Started in 2017, it opened its doors after nearly 2 years of expansion on 9,935 square meters of facilities dedicated to the new joinery, high-tech laminating operations with post-curing oven, paint, grinding and polishing rooms as well as warehouse and logistics areas.
Cruising boats to maxi yachts
All production activities are now located in the same place, implying better organization and logistical operations with gains in efficiency and quality. In fact, the proximity between the engineering department and production allows for an improvement in our sailboat production. The Plug &Mould plant still remains in Kรฅllby, and most of our caps and molds are milled in a huge robotic milling line. The hulls of the smaller cruising yachts are laid by hand and are vacuum-laid, while the larger models are made of foam-lined carbon, the focus on quality and weight savings here is continuous and relentless.
Composite constructions of Maxi yacht hulls are a combination of pre-preg and Sprint material. The BTC is a modern, functional and eye-catching showcase for customers and potential customers visiting the Nautor Swan shipyard. All this will maximize the interaction between naval architect, engineers, and boat builders!
