“On board she moves like a cat … you can tell she is someone who has sailed a lot.”.
Sailor Greta Thunberg
Sailor Greta Thunberg, 22, has just stepped off the Grand Soleil 39 “Mirit,” a 12.5-meter classic boat designed by 1983 Alain Jezequel. We are in Genoa, in the Darsena in front of the Galata Museo del Mare, in front of a shouting crowd at the maxi-strike in transportation, schools and health care and also involving thousands of Palestine activists.

Our “insider” is the boat’s owner, Lucio Ruocco, who hosted the young Swedish activist aboard his boat: “He talks little in the boat (like real sailors), but he understands boats.”

It took only a little less than a mile for Lucio to realize it. Greta Thunberg, who arrived in Genoa yesterday, where she had dinner with some activists and dockworkers from Calp (Collettivo Autonomo Operatori Portuali) and UN rapporteur Francesca Albanese, boarded Mirit, along with Albanese and Thiago Avila (the Brazilian activist who was among the organizers of the Global Sumud Flotilla), on the docks at Mandraccio Wharf in Genoa’s Old Port.

The boat accompanied the Genoese procession (in which Greta participated early in the morning) parading by sea, in harbor waters, from the Mandraccio to the Galata.
Atlantic crossings and missions
But we already knew that Greta is a true sailor, and she has many miles on her shoulders. Thunberg, who in addition to fighting climate change has long supported the Palestinian cause, was one of the faces of the Global Sumud Flotilla and tried to reach the Gaza Strip aboard the ketch “Madleen,” which was later stopped by the Israeli navy.

Instead, in 2019 he had completed an Atlantic crossing, from England to New York, USA, aboard the Imoca 60 “Malizia 2” to take part in a climate summit organized by the United Nations.
A Good Classic Boat for Greta Thunberg
For today’s Genovese event, Greta Thunberg-let us tell you-selected a good boat, a real queen of Classic Boats: they called it the “Spaghetti Swan” because it had a similar coloring to that of the Finnish shipyard, but the Grand Soleil 39 shows instead how the Italians were able to make “premium” boats, with the Made in Italy touch.

Twelve and a half meters long and 3.76 wide, the design is by that genius Frenchman living in Italy named Alain Jezequel. Her second-hand quotes range between 40,000 and 50,000 euros for a boat in fair condition, going up to 80,000 if she is kept as a gem…
