The “eSailingCup – Cagliari Trophy” is an innovative event that combines virtual and real sailing to promote tourism and the area. The competition is developed in two phases: an online regatta accessible to all via app, followed by an in-person final in the picturesque Gulf of Angels, in Cagliari. A replicable model to enhance coastlines around the world.

An absolutely innovative regatta, both virtual and real, which aims to use offshore sailing as an element of tourism and social promotion. This is the spirit and goal of the “eSailingCup – Cagliari Trophy,” an event organized by the association AVAS – Armatori Vela d’Altura Sardegna, whose third edition awards ceremony was held Sunday, Nov. 9, at the Doglio Theater in Cagliari.

It is the special format of the “eSailingCup – Cagliari Trophy” that is the real novelty. The first phase of the regatta was the online competition on the race course positioned along the coast of the Sardinian capital, faithfully reconstructed in 3D. Through their smartphones, the more than 1,000 participants who downloaded the eSailingCup app (free and available for Android and Apple), from all over Italy and abroad, challenged each other trying to be among the top 10 finalists in terms of the number of victories achieved.

From keyboard to helm: the “eSailing” revolution

With this first phase concluded, the winners from Milan, Rome, Venice, Verbania, Naples, Crema and Macerata were hosted in Cagliari to participate in the real final in the Gulf of Angels. Here the participants abandoned smartphones and tablets and competed for real this time aboard offshore sailing boats provided by AVAS in a race course identical to that practiced online.

Hospitality for all racers was provided by the prestigious Palazzo Doglio hotel, Official Hospitality, which is a partner in the project. In short, a combination of the virtual and real worlds that is a fine example of how sailing can be used not only as a form of entertainment and sporting discipline, but also as an excellent flywheel for tourism and promotion of the coastal territory, not only in Italy and its islands, but also in the rest of the world.

Sailing as a tourism driver: a model to export

In fact, thanks to the possibility of declining the format in other maritime locations, the event stands as a replicable model everywhere for the enhancement of the territory through the combination of sports and digital innovation.

“The ‘eSailingCup – Cagliari Trophy,'” explain the organizers of AVAS (Armatori Vela d’Altura Sardegna), “continues to grow year after year, helping to create a community that lives the sea with passion, both in the virtual and real dimensions. Our goal is to involve more and more people, especially young people, in an inclusive and international sports experience.”
