Day 12 of racing for the Transat Café l’Or and the arrivals in Martinique have begun with the Ultim class trimarans. First across the finish line was Tom Laperche’s SVR Lazartigue, followed just four hours later by Thomas Coville’s Sodebo. Also shortly over the finish line were the first Ocean Fifty, while the first Imoca 60s are 400 miles from the conclusion of their race. In the Imola the leader Charal looks solid, while it is an open tussle for the remaining podium positions.
The Class 40s experience two worlds turned upside down, between those in the north fighting a new storm and those in the south becalmed to contour the anticyclone.
Class 40, a new storm
Leader Corentin Doguet and the group of northerners are going straight up against a new front with winds over 4o knots, after which they will find a rotation of the wind from the southwest to the northwest, which at the turn will allow them to head directly west. Also in the group is Andrea Fornaro on Influence 2.
At the moment the option pays off, but watch out because the vast anticyclone zone that is further south will also swell in their path, shuffling the cards in the coming days. The northern option in the long run may lose much of its advantage, and it will be a question of whether it remains a winner or not.
To the south, the rest of the fleet, where there are also Maccaferri Futura, Ekinox, Les Invincibles, with the other Italians, is experiencing the opposite situation: minimal speeds, almost total becalmed, with an anticyclone that to get around even forces boats to do negative VMG at times. In the long run, however, should the southern group manage to hook the trade wind even lightly, the situation could change in an important way, with a possible recovery of many miles by this option. In short, the overall ranking is still to be played out.
