Artisan Boatworks has redefined the “small boat” concept with the launch of the Ha’ Penny 20, a boat that defies all expectations. Designed by Tom MacNaughton, this is not just a daysailer, but a true micro-cruiser built for adventure and long ocean voyages in a trailerable format.
This boat is designed for the solo sailor or adventurous couple who wish to explore the world without the burden of owning a large yacht.
Secrets of Ha’ Penny 20
The key points that differentiate the Ha’ Penny 20 are the very compact wheelhouse that provides a full 1.98 meters of interior boat height, lifeboat safety due to the heavy displacement typical of a full keel, the total absence of sea intakes (eliminating the risk of flooding) and the absence of an open cockpit.
In addition, the hull is made of Alaskan yellow cedar wrapped in epoxy and unidirectional fiberglass, a combination of Artisan Boatworks’ classic craftsmanship and modern high-strength materials. Another feature of note is the innovative junk rigging, mounted on an unstayed carbon fiber mast.
This configuration, which takes inspiration from historic Asian ocean-going vessels, offers simplified maneuvering, thanks to easy and fast sail reduction (reefing intake), ideal for solo sailors.
Below deck, the prevailing rationale is efficiency; guests will be accommodated in two bunks with an interior height of 1.98 meters and will have a small galley area with ample stowage space, making life on board comfortable even for long voyages.
The Ha’Penny 20 is equipped with a coal stove for colder nights and a solar-powered electrical system for self-support. It is also equipped with a smart water solution: a few bottles placed on dedicated shelves, eliminating tanks and potential seepage points. The Ha’Penny 20 is not a boat for those who like to go fast, but for those who want to get lost in the middle of the sea even solo. Her heavy displacement ensures a calm but extremely safe ride in all sea conditions. When maneuvering in port, Ha’ Penny 20 is driven by a Torqeedo electric motor powered by solar panels and a wind generator.
