Boat shoes are immutable, the most beautiful ones are these
Taken from the 1975 Journal of Sailing, Year 01, No. 02, August, pp. 60/61.
More than forty years have passed, but if one wants to feel like a true sailor-the hardcore kind-they have to disguise themselves as sea wolves. A review of shoes and boots of the era, perfect for today’s times.
Shoes and boots are indispensable to boaters. The former to avoid getting hit, and also because you can’t be barefoot all the time, especially when it’s cold. The latter, because you just can’t do without them if it’s raining or rough seas. They must, however, have prehensile knurled rubber soles so they don’t slip on the deck, and as for the shoes, they must be made of leather or fabric that doesn’t shed even if it gets wet.
Above, left, in padded denim canvas Clarks shoes with blue and white rubber edging. They cost 13,000 liras at Marangoni, Corso Sempione 63, Milan. On the right, red canvas (also available in blue) Sperry Top-sider shoes. They cost 13,400 liras and can be found at Tomasoni Topsail, Piazza della Vittoria, Genoa.
Left, Romika boots with plush interior, calf string and ventilation holes. They cost 26,000 liras at Tigullio Yacht Chandler, in Santa Margherita Ligure. At right, the Elvstrom boot (also available in light blue and blue). They cost 19,600 liras (37 to 39) and 20,700 (40 to 45). You can find them in Genoa, Italy, at Elvstrom Italia.
From Dunlop (left) the not-too-high boot with lacing on the front, plush inside and with anatomical insole. From Nautica De Carolis, via Manin 3, Milan, it costs 11,500 liras. At right, in yellow and blue, laced on the side, the Viking boot with knurled reinforcement on the front for a better grip on the trapeze strap. They cost 32,000 liras, from Nautica De Carolis, Milan.
At left is the classic Sperry Top-sider moccasin in brown leather (also available in beige) with natural leather string. You can find them for 32,100 lira at Tigullio Yacht Chandler, in Santa Margherita Ligure. At right, the beige moccasin with brown piping and wedge sole. Available from 27,600 lira from Elvstrom Italia, Genoa.
Dunlop blue canvas shoes (left) with white sole edge and piping. They cost 8,500 liras at Tigullio Tacht Chandler, Santa Margherita Ligure. Side by side, Vis shoes in denim canvas, with yellow stitching and terry insole. You can find them at Tigullio Yacht Chandler for 14,000 liras.
