The second-hand market, never more than for sailing, is a vast, complex world full of potholes and variables. And, if figuring out which boat is right for you, and which among the ones viewed is the best option, can be difficult, even more so can selling your own. Nonetheless, the world of used boats is the one that lends itself best to much of the public, both on the quality-price front and on the choice front-not to mention, the Classic enthusiasts, who only here find, or can find answers. With this in mind, to assist each front, the
Classic Boat Club
is trying to meet you, be you an owner, or a prospective buyer. So here are 7 used boats, observed in the detail of their design and now entered in the
Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value.

Buy Classic | 7 boats for sale under the lens (9-12 meters)

First, a premise: the
Classic Boat Club
has nothing to do with sales platforms, and it is not a marketplace. Its purpose is not to sell boats, and nothing is gained from it. However, celebrating and valuing Classic Boats also means taking responsibility for helping those who, care for them, have taken care of them, or intend to do so. That is why, the Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value, offers the option to report a boat listed as for sale. But this is purely a reporting, an assistance in visibility. Any negotiation, information, or contact is done directly between the interested parties and the property, without commission or meddling some.

Belfax | Zuanelli, Fax

M 9.60 x 3.20; 1992; Alain Jezequel

Introduced in 1991, the Fax is one of Zuanelli’s 1990s gems. Signed by the French master, this is an exceptional performance cruiser. The perfectly maintained and maniacally updated registry specimen is still a not inconsiderable racer today, equipped to the best of its ability to remain competitive on every circuit, even thirty-odd years after her launch. A testament, too, to the proverbial build quality of the yard, as well as to that of the design, still excellent decades whole.

Livadi | Beneteau, First 305

M 9.80 x 3.25; 1987; Jean Berret

Designed by the great Jean Berret, the First 305 is one of the 1980s successes of the French yard, which will produce as many as 640 units in just four years. Launched in 1987, Livadi is part of the mid-series and, as per the First line, is a hybrid hull, capable of lending itself as much to racing as to cruising. She thus has appendages optimized for the wheelbase, but does not fail to offer cruising-friendly interiors, with double cabins, galley and living quarters.

Nelly | Benello, Gaia

M 11 x 2.95; 1967; Sparkman & Stephens

Designed by Sparkman & Stephens, in the late 1960s Benello began the successful Gaia series, ante-litteram performance-cruisers whose goodness would not go unnoticed. In fact, Nelly, specifically, will gather a not inconsiderable palmares, continuing with the good performance long into the 1980s, winning more than one Peroni Nastro Azzurro Cup. Suitable for both racing and offshore cruising, she is simply a gem, unmistakably classic.

Golondrina (Formerly Ojalá) | One-Off

M 11.24 x 3.02; Carlini, 1968; Sparkman & Stephens

Project No. 1922 by Sparkman & Stephens, Golondrina, also known as Ojalà, is a classic example of the late 1960s RORC One-Tonner, a highly elegant, multi-winner hull and, among other things, a forerunner of modern water lines to say the least. She was born as Ojalà on commission from Charles Holland, an Englishman transplanted to Argentina and moved to Italy after World War II (having served here at the
British Special Operations Executive
and in the
Canadian Devil’s Brigade
) Golondirna is a ‘valuable’ hull to say the least, an excellent piece of sailing history.

Talìa | Valiant 40

M 12.20 x 3.76; 1980; Robert Perry

A famous project to say the least on the Made in USA shipbuilding front, the Valiant 40 is one of the great designs of Robert Perry, who signs with this 12.2-meter cruiser a cruiser worthy of Sail magazine’s Hall of Fame. Excellent marine qualities, comfort to spare classic lines indeed make this a unique boat, a bluewater to consider if what you want to do is not beyond pure sailing, anywhere.

Gulliver | Hallberg Rassy 41

M 12.55 x 3.70; 1978; Olle Enderlein

One of the shipyard’s cult designs, the Hallberg rassy 41 is a purest old-school Scandinavian bluewater, a hull capable of going literally anywhere. Gulliver, specifically, proves this, having sailed much of the world already, from the Mediterranean to French Polynesia. Simply put, a boat to be fully experienced, whether for a long summer cruise or circumnavigating the globe.
