We had (and you had) said that to win the Barcolana-or rather, to arrive first at the finish line, which in this great festival of Trieste sailing with 1875 boats at the start, is equivalent to winning-would be one of the three big Maxi Arca SGR, Marta 07, or Prosecco doc Shockwave. In the end, the “defender” won.
The Maxi Arca SGR is once again confirmed as the undisputed queen of the Barcolana. She closed the 57th edition in 1 hour, 43 minutes and 42 seconds, after a 13-mile race in the Gulf of Trieste characterized by medium-light wind where tactics and speed made the difference, allowing her to maintain the lead from the first to the last meter. For the team of Furio Benussi of Trieste , 57, this was the fourth success (worth winning the Autumn Cup) in five years with ARCA, a domination interrupted only in 2022 by the historic victory of Wendy Schmidt’s Deep Blue, the first woman in the to win the regatta.

A Barcolana with the family
This year’s podium also tells a good family story. In fact, second place went to Marta 07, a maxi yacht skippered by 18-year-old Marta Benussi, Furio’s daughter (and captained by Furio’s brother Gabriele , 55), who crewed with her brother Gabriele. A true family affair, which gave a very special flavor to this Barcolana.“My task,” said Furio Benussi in an interview, ” was yes to win in the Gulf of Trieste but the family challenge was one not to be missed, by any means. I don’t even want to imagine if my daughter had won how I would have felt! “.

Terzo Demartis con Prosecco Doc Shockwave3
Completing the podium is the maxi yacht Prosecco DOC Shockwave3 owned by Claudio Demartis and Pompeo Tria, one of the regular protagonists of the last few years (we were also on board, soon the report from aboard), at the helm Mitja Kosmina with Michele Paoletti as tactician. The maxi yacht of owners Claudio Demartis and Pompeo Tria finished third in the 57áµ… edition of the Barcolana, with a little bitterness in its mouth.
“We did the race we had to do, we knew we might not have chosen the right edge at the start but at least we tried to win,” owner Claudio Demartis commented hotly. “We had already racked up several second places, so the choice was between hitting the jackpot with first place or standing on the third step of the podium. We did third, and we will try again next time. The crew had exemplary conduct in every maneuver, had to deal with a small technical anomaly at the start that did not allow us to find the ideal course and then forced us to chase. “.

Arca SGR: the record-breaking maxi
Arca SGR is a 100-foot (about 30.5 meters) maxi yacht. Built in Australia in 2003 by Hart Marine she was born to race in the famous Rolex Sydney-Hobart one of the world’s iconic offshore races, which she won immediately in her first year of participation. Furio Benussi found her again in 2015, the boat had ended up on the rocks, half destroyed and abandoned on a yard on the island of Menorca. Restored, she is back to her glory. Also going strong in competitions such as the Barcolana, this boat is a true fireball of the sea. With this year’s victory she consolidates her palmares in her home waters, setting a trio of consecutive victories from 2023 to 2025.

Trieste, the sailing capital of the world
As always, the Barcolana is not just a regatta but a true celebration of sailing, including excitement at sea and encounters on the docks. Trieste was transformed into a huge open-air stage, with more than 15,000 sailors on the shores and 1,865 boats at sea ready to enjoy the show. The atmosphere under the majestic Piazza dell’Unità d’Italia, among side events and festive moments, once again consecrated the Barcolana as the largest European sailing event in terms of participation.
