We went down to the dock for a couple of hours in Trieste, among sailors and onlookers, to gather some predictions about the world’s most crowded regatta. We asked you and posted it on our Instagram page: who wins the Barcolana this year?
People’s opinions aside. What are the boats to watch out for? Because the names that have emerged are many, but the favorites now seem clear again for this year: Marta07, Arca Wild Thing (winner of the 2024 edition) and ShockWave Prosecco DOC.
The weather forecast calls for light northeasterly winds of 10-12 knots, with sunshine and moderate gusts: ideal conditions for a fast and spectacular Barcolana.
Favorites in the water
Why them? The answer is simple: they are the supermaxis who have been animating the competition for years and who, again this year, promise sparks.
- Arca Wild Thing, with Furio Benussi at the helm, is the boat to beat.
- Marta07 (formerly Morning Glory), led by brother Gabriele Benussi with young Marta Benussi at the helm, represents the family’s “young” team.
- ShockWave Prosecco DOC, from owner Claudio De Martis, the historic creator of the Barcolana, will have Mitja Kosmina at the helm with Michele Paoletti as tactician.
The test: Barcolana Maxi
The “Barcolana Warm Up,” held yesterday, offered a preview of what we will see on Sunday. The start, with a northeast wind around 10 knots, immediately tested the crews, who were then forced to manage a gradual drop to a very light breeze.
From our seat aboard Claudio De Martis‘ team, we witnessed a tight duel between Arca and ShockWave, resolved only at the last buoy, where Furio Benussi and his crew on the last maneuver, found the decisive cue to overtake.
Sunday: the great challenge
All set, then, for a Barcolana 2025 that promises to be balanced and hard-fought.
Each team has its own strengths:
- ShockWave prefers light wind
- Arca can rely on larger size and power, which favors it over others when the wind increases
- Marta07 is said to be really fast, and this year she re-enters the game with the grit of the new “Fast and Furio” generation.
The excitement in the water doesn’t end there
While waiting for the start, eyes today also remain on the Barcolana Classic, where the vintage boats-with their timeless charm-continue to provide genuine excitement, reminding us that at sea, sometimes time really does seem to stand still.
