Swan 441 R

A few weeks ago we posed a problem, that of 10 meters (

the two news items). A segment that, for one reason or another (to each his own theories), has tended to disappear and remains available mainly in the Classic Boat market. Good. A great many of you have expressed your opinions on the subject, with a hundred or so responses, comments and statements enlivening an increasingly interesting discourse. Here, however, a question emerged-or rather, an opinion. While appreciation for the lamented 10-meter was more than evident, another range was proposed as among the most suitable for Mediterranean cruising needs: the 13-meter range. Could that be the magic number?

Classic Boat Cult | 13 meters, magic number? Here are some of the best (pt.2)

Theory has it that a boat is like a glove; it has to fit the wearer. However, why not ask which, among the 13-meter boats, are among the most valuable hulls anyway? Among the many, we hypothesized 15 Classic Boats to be contemplated in this list: are they the best on the 13-meter front? Given the first 7 (which you can find here), here are the next ones.

Obviously, selecting 15 Classic Boats capable of defining a segment as vast as the 13-meter segment is a daunting task, to say the least. Some-some by merit, some by necessity-were necessarily excluded. Others, however, could not be missed, although, admittedly, they are not among the most common boats. The intention here, however, is not to define which is the ultimate boat. Rather, the idea is to celebrate which, among them, have stood out, even if in their own small way, among the most important of an entire thirty years.

X-442

X-Yachts; 13.5 x 4.13; 1993; Niels Jeppesen

In production from 1993 to 2003, the X-442 is one of Jeppesen’s 1990s Classics. Produced in as many as 127 examples, it was the third performance-cruiser produced by the shipyard, a boat that was luxurious and not oblivious to comfort, yet deeply sporty and strong on performance. Rigid, top-quality, and strong on well-thought-out spaces, it soon became a role model for the many 40-footers of the late 20th century. Today, it is simply still a top player, ideal both on the cruising front and for having fun among the buoys. SWAN 441-R

Nautor Swan; 13.54 x 4.06; 1978; Ron Holland

Joining the Nautor Swan line-up in the late 1970s, the Swan 411 is the quintessential Holland signature cruiser-racer. In short, it is a hull capable of combining performance and marine qualities to the fullest, but without denigrating comfort, and with this in mind, it features moderate displacement, with a not excessive beam, fine entries and low drag. But it is in the R (Racing) variant that she extracts the most from her design, coming to life in a lightened complex with greater lift-to-drag rate, essential for improved bowline performance. The rig and sail plan also change, with a taller mast to increase canvas surface area in light airs, thus offering more power and more leeway in variable conditions, extracting potential from the hull beyond its pure speed capabilities. Features that, overall, fully reflect Holland’s philosophies of the period. Find out about her every detail and market values by consulting her dedicated fact sheet, found in the

FIRST 45 F5

Beneteau; 13.69 x 4.29; 1990; Bruce Farr

With the turn of the century, Beneteau began a brilliant collaboration with Bruce Farr and, from this, some of the greatest Firsts were born, including the entire F series. In the case of the First 45 F5, Farr’s pencil meets Pininfarina’s styling for a hull as fast as it is pleasing to the eye. Medium displacement, flap hatch stern, and excellent bowsprit, it will be a popular boat, both in performance and lines. The deck, semi-flush, has a long and very low, rounded deckhouse, full of windows to brightly illuminate the beautiful interior.Find out every detail and market values by checking out its dedicated factsheet, found in the

MARAMU 46

Amel; 13.8 x 3.99; 1978; H. Amel & J. Carteau

An icon of the French way to bluewater, the Maramu 46 was nothing short of an iconic design in terms of its target segment. Designed to be a reliable and easily manageable bluewater, this 46-footer is in fact easy to handle short-handed, comfortable and absolutely ready to sail in any condition. Not for nothing, despite its size, it was built in 288 units. It will also inspire the 1989 Super Maramu. X-452

X-Yachts; 13.5 x 4.13; 1987; Niels Jeppesen

It is 1987 and X-Yachts wants to be the manufacturer of the most competitive Cruiser-Racer the market has to offer. In short, Jeppesen wants to create the best boat in the segment, the ultimate design. That’s how, in a hurry, a small masterpiece was born, the new X-452. And it works a miracle. It is in fact a 45-footer not only strong in beautiful lines (crowned by an exceptional transom), but also excellent on the performance front, of which it is in fact quite impossible to complain. Great boat. Find out its every detail and market values by consulting its dedicated fact sheet, found in the

GRAND SOLEIL 45

Pardo Shipyard; 13.94 x 4.14; 1998; German Frers

As the 1980s drew to a close, Cantiere del Pardo approached Frers to design a 45-footer. Thus was born a hull that is, to say the least, elegant, extremely marine and definitely capable of combining performance and comfort in the best possible way. The water lines alone are clean, streamlined, and draw a boat that is pleasing both at the helm and to the eye. The rest, is proverbial: an excellent turn-of-the-millennium hull signed by one of the greatest masters of the century. Tradition, in this sense, is not lacking and, indeed, for Najad it found its zenith in 2000, with the Najad 460, a little jewel signed Judel & Vrolijk. Signed by French magician Alain Jézéquel, the Grand Soleil 46 is one of Cantiere del Pardo’s great performance-cruisers, a masterpiece of the early 1980s. Just under fourteen meters, streamlined and fast, she is a hull fully a child of the period, in her own way very elegant, and undoubtedly capable of offering maximum comfort, as well as top finishes. One of the yard’s many great designs. Find out about her every detail and market values by consulting her dedicated sheet, found in the
