Once again this year the VELA Cup ended in grand style with the last leg of the year in Capo d’Orlando, the ideal gateway to a beautiful cruise in the Aeolian Islands. Organized in collaboration with Capo d’Orlando Marina and Spartivento Yachts & Charters and with the support of the Yacht Club Capo d’Orlando, the Sicilian leg gave all registered crews the ideal conditions for everyone to have fun at sea: from the cruising boat of less than 9 meters to the 16-meter trimaran (by 10 wide …), they all raced – as happens in every stage of the VELA Cup – with identical rules and course, and as in every stage the rankings were drawn up using the VELA Cup rating(we explain how it works here). We explain below how it went and who all the winners are.

Wind & sunshine (in October) : what more do you want from life?

A beautiful day of summer sunshine (but remembering that we are still in October!) welcomed the crews on Saturday morning. As soon as they left the Capo d’Orlando Marina, the 30 boats (of the 45 registered) found themselves crossing the starting line with a nice wind and about 1 meter to 1 meter and a half of wave: perfect and challenging conditions that allowed all crews to test sails, maneuvers and tactics.

The course included the start in front of the long shoreline that, once out of the Capo d’Orlando Marina, stretches eastward. The first buoy was positioned off the promontory on which the Capo d’Orlando Lighthouse stands, with the second buoy just in front of the promontory itself before returning to the starting line gate, and ending with a sort of stick between the committee boat and buoy 1.

The wind was over 10 knots over most of the race course, with gusts even over 15 knots at times. Thewave did not drop as the hours passed, and indeed in the afternoon (after the regatta) it was much higher than in the morning.

The first boat to cross the finish line in real time was the Farr 45 Sagola Spartivento, owned by Giuseppe Fornich and Domenico Sorrentino, entered in the Sport Boat category, which finished the race in 1 hour, 14 minutes and 25 seconds. The first to cross the finish line in the Crusing Boat category, however, was a catamaran, NYO by Giuseppe Divella, a carbon SIG 45 that took 1 hour, 28 minutes and 5 seconds to complete the course.
