SWAN 441R

specifications: Nautor Swan; 13.54 x 4.06; 1978-1979; (#5); Ron Holland

Entering the Swan line-up in the late 1970s, the Swan 411 (13.5 x 4.06 m) is the quintessential Holland signature cruiser-racer. In short, it is a hull that can best combine performance and marine qualities, but without denigrating comfort. With this in mind, it presents a moderate displacement, with a not excessive beam, fine entries and reduced drag. But it is in the R (Racing) variant that she extracts the most from her design, taking life in a lightened complex with greater lift-to-drag rate, essential for improved bowline performance. The rig and sail plan also change, with a taller mast to increase canvas surface area in light airs, thus offering more power and more leeway in variable conditions, extracting potential from the hull beyond its pure speed capabilities. Features that, overall, fully reflect Holland’s philosophies of the period

SWAN 48 (F)

specs: Nautor Swan; 15.09 x 4.32 m; 1995-2002 (#57); German Frers

Launched in 1995 and designed by Germán Frers, the Swan 48 is one of the most successful examples of the offshore cruiser-racer: a boat capable of uncompromisingly tackling long oceanic voyages, but with a sporting soul firmly in place. Powerful and streamlined lines, with a fast hull and generous rig, give life to a hull capable of surprising even in regattas, as demonstrated by the lightened “R” version, with a deeper keel, fractional rigging and a minimized interior. The Swan 48 remains, in every variant, a boat built with great accuracy and reference finishes. A true offshore sports boat with the elegance and solidity typical of the Frers-Nautor Swan duo.

SWAN 55 (S&S)

specs: Nautor Swan; 16.65 x 4.33 m; 1970-1974 (#16); Sparkman & Stephens

With the Swan 55 we are placed before a milestone in shipbuilding, both Scandinavian and worldwide. It is in fact from this splendid 16.5 meters -still with a deckhouse, by the way- that a line-up of legendary hulls will be born. First the legendary 65, then the 57, will in fact be offspring of the experiences of this first 50+ from Nautor’s house, a hull in its own way already excellent but, then, ‘small’, for the elite who were looking for a true bluewater cruiser. Among the 16 Swan 55′, the best known, today’s Gandalf, which was, however, Tauranga, the same 55′ with which Pascoli participated precisely in the first Whitbread round the World Race in 1973, won by its worthy heir, the Sayula, a ’65… Impeccable boat, a true classic.

SWAN 56

specifications: Nautor Swan; 17.53 x 4.73 m; 1996-2006 (#46); German Frers

Germán Frers’ nineteenth design for Nautor, the Swan 56 is a high-performance bluewater/cruiser-racer designed for efficiency and reliability on long ocean voyages. The hull, with its taut, streamlined lines, features significant waterline length and a balanced distribution of volumes, with enlarged aft sections and tapered angles of attack, in keeping with the Argentine’s design language. The sail plan, then, optimizes the power to wetted area ratio, while the “Regatta” option-introduced in 1998-provides for a fractional rig, increased draft and structural lightening, with some units also supplied rigged at the masthead. Overall, she stands out for her design coherence and formal cleanliness: no ribs or appendages disturb the fluidity of the hull, confirming the refined and functional approach typical of the Frers-Nautor collaboration.

SWAN 77

specifications: Nautor Swan; 24.01 x 6.00 m; 1992-2003 (#10); German Frers

Launched in 1992, the Swan 77 represents Nautor’s answer to a demanding owner looking for a large yacht that could combine the performance of a racer with the livability of a true bluewater cruiser. Designed by Germán Frers as a cruiser-racer, the 77 combines powerful lines with generous volumes, providing speed, stability, and surprising maneuverability even with a small crew. The interior layout offers superyacht-like spaces and finishes, while the hull, designed by Frers, retains the agility and fluidity typical of his designs, making this maxi a boat capable of tackling long cruises with a sporty flair and great comfort.
