Oyster 62
Oyster 62 sailing through the ice,

Sailing around the world is not for everyone. Easier, however, is to find those who, in this regard, are lost inside these fantasies. In this column, also fantasizing, we have already seen 5 ‘small’ Classic Boats with which, all things considered, it is not an impossible thing (here). Now, however, it is time to look at hulls that are a bit more comfortable, quasi-ammiraglie (15.8 to 20.3 meters) that, for one reason or another, are made specifically to meet this need, if need we can call it. Born in the second half of the 1990s, in the 2000s at the latest, here are 7 ‘young’ Classic Boats papable for setting off and not looking back, whatever corner of the world you aspire to.

  • Classic Boat enthusiasts? or sailing in general? There is great news! 7 90s flagships for cruising the world in comfort (16+ m)

The panorama concerning the Classic Boats -that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-. is a vast and ever-expanding context, composed of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to the Classic Boat Club and to our information sections, we have created a series of articles, aimed at exploring some exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating. In this particular case, as announced, it is the turn to look at 7 outstanding projects, 7 hulls from the late 1990s that, each in its own way, raised the bar on the ‘globetrotting’ front…

HALLBERG RASSY 62

NAUTICAT 515

specs: Nauticat; 15.8 x 4.60 m; 1999; Sparkman & Stephens

The smallest in this review, actually just 20 cm below the defined limit, nevertheless enters this list on merit, if only for the signature she bears. Launched in 1999, in fact, the Nauticat 515 is a forgotten gem from Sparkman & Stephens, a hull mistakenly often confused with motorsailers, but in fact deeply marine, and certainly well capable of sailing. Here, in fact, despite the tall pilot-house and long deckhouse, the New York studio gives life to a good-performing bluewater, strong with an elongated keel (to reduce draft) and powerful lines, capable, thus, of going anywhere. In good globetrotter style, then, she offers a huge interior, to say the least, especially for a 50-footer.

MOODY 54

specs: Moody; 16.43 x 4.85 m; 2000; Bill Dixon

At 16.43 meters in length, the Moody 54 fits right in, finally, as announced. Designed by the great Bill Dixon, this is a generous hull, conceived, exactly, with long cruising in mind. And the numbers tell a long story: in just 4 years, the yard was able to produce and sell as many as 55 of them… What’s more, the central cockpit is extremely dry and well protected, the interior volumes are generous, comfortable, and the large windows that characterize the deckhouse ensure abundant interior light, making every stay even more enjoyable. In short, it is a boat, first and foremost, designed to make sure that wherever you are, you are comfortable.

Contest 55 CS

specs: Contest; 16.75 x 4.65 m; 1999; Doug Peterson & Georg Nissen

With the Contest 55 CS we are confronted with a thoroughbred, a globetrotting hull like few others. A well-protected central cockpit, huge interior volumes, intelligent, manageable short-handed maneuvers, and lines that are, to say the least, marine, in fact make it an extremely popular boat among lovers of the genre, who well emphasize its qualities, especially speed. If the latter may surprise you, so did I turn out to the specialized press of the time, which did not fail, precisely, to praise the splendid hull developed here by Peterson. Exceptional, then, also the interior, conceived, instead, by none other than Georg Nissen.

Solaris 59

specs: Solaris (Se.Ri.Gi); 17.9 x 4.85 m; 1999; Doug Peterson

Not exactly born to be a globetrotter, but more designed for long offshore cruising, the Solaris 59 is a hull that turns out to live up to the role. Signed by the great Doug Peterson, Se.Ri.Gi launched this gem in 1999, surprising a bit of everyone. Elegant in its lines, powerful below the waterline and very complete in its interior, it is indeed a hull that does not want to miss a thing. To this, the well-protected central cockpit brings an extra ‘safety first’ factor, to which the short-handed manageability, the well thought-out rig and rigging, and the excellent hull go a long way. In short, another gem.

Hallberg Rassy 62

specs: Hallberg Rassy; 18.88 x 5.15 m; 1997; German Frers

Few shipyards can boast the name Hallberg Rassy carries when tackling the realm of serial ‘globetrotters’. In short, it is these, famously, the bluewater yard par excellence, globetrotting boats above all. With the 62-footer in 1997, the HR-German Frers pairing confirmed this once again. Not only, in fact, was she the flagship of the year-built in as many as 25 examples until 2011; but she was in fact a hull more than true to her name. At 18.88 meters long, it indeed follows tradition it is comfortable, it is seaworthy, and it goes everywhere.

Oyster 62

specs: Oyster Yachts; 19.28 x 5.39 m; 2000; Rob Humphreys

A great little masterpiece by Rob Humphreys and the yard, comparing the Oyster 62 involves comparing it to the numbers, because they are the ones who can speak best of it. Capable of putting as many as 200 daily miles under her keel, she is indeed a hull made to get anywhere, comfortably and, above all, fast and safe. Designed, really, for living aboard, she offers everything you could want, from safety to performance, and the pedigree speaks volumes: to her credit, in fact, she boasts ARC victories, victories at Antigua Sailing Week, and Arctic voyages up to 80 degrees north…in short, an unstoppable hull.

Oyster 66

specs: Oyster Yachts; 20.37 x 5.48 m; 1999; Rob Humphreys

She is the gentle giant of the 1990s, the turn-of-the-century flagship according to Oyster. Also designed by Rob Humphreys and launched just a year before her ‘little’ sister, this well over 20-meter creature is the globetrotter for those who can’t be faulted, an elegant boat that offers comfort in abundance without disdaining performance. Put simply, with a marriage of indispensable qualities in cruising, Humphreys here signs yet another excellent boat. A little cult.
