Italian party in Horta, Azores, among the Class 40s, with the first leg of the Les Sables – Horta – Les Sables being won by Maccaferri Futura, Luca Rosetti’s Musa 40 with co-skipper Matteo Sericano. An important success, achieved against the Class 40 fleet practically fielded in full.
Les Sables – Horta, how did the first stage go
With a time of 4 days, 14 hours, 10 minutes and 32 seconds, Maccaferri Futura set a new record on the race, also setting an excellent benchmark in the 24-hour 409-mile race. A solid performance by Luca Rosetti and Matteo Sericano, who sailed consistently in the lead group from the first beat. Pep Costa with VSF Sport (formerly Allagrande Pirelli) took the stage podium, third place for Fabien Delahaye’s Legallais. Also noteworthy is the 11th position for Andrea Fornaro’s Influence 2, also racing Alberto Riva (seventh aboard Ekinox as co-skipper) and Pietro Luciani (13th aboard Les Invincibile as co-skipper).
The decisive move for Luca Rosetti and Maccaferri was on the approach to the Azores, when they decided on a slightly more outward and less direct route than their direct opponents, finding themselves sailing in windier conditions than and closing on the fleet albeit with a fairly small margin. Margin that will have to be defended in the second leg from the Azores to France that will start on July 8, the victory being awarded on the sum of the times between the two legs.
“We are really satisfied with the regatta: it was an intense and important race, especially because it was our first real competition with this boat. We faced difficult moments and battled with the other crews, we took a risky choice, that of pushing south, but that turned out to be a winner in the end,” said Luca Rosetti upon arrival.
