5 Outstanding Swans, signed Frers (14.3 < 20.6 m)

The panorama concerning the Classic Boats -that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-. is a vast and ever-expanding context, composed of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to the Classic Boat Club and to our information sections, we have created a series of articles, aimed at exploring some exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating. In this specific case, as announced, it is precisely the turn of the Argentine, and his nothing short of excellent collaboration with the Scandinavian Swan. Here, then, are five cult favorites from the Swan/Frers duo…

Formosa, Swan 51 & Swan No. 1000

SWAN 46

specs: Nautor Swan; 14.35 x 4.40 m; 1983; German Frers

It is 1983 when Frers signs a 46-footer destined for resounding success. It is the Swan 46, a hull as powerful as it is pleasing, elegant in its lines and fast under waterline. It is the classic Swan of the 1980s, a boat that is capable of sailing, elegant, and absolutely not oblivious to comfort. As for performance, there’s not even a mention of it–it will be a 100-unit success, complete with mid-series improvements in 1990.

SWAN 51

specs: Nautor Swan; 15.62 x 4.47 m; 1980; German Frers

The Swan 51 is not just any Swan. It is the incipit of an era, it is the first Swan signed Frers. That alone would be enough to make it an iconic boat, but the 51 is also an unmistakable design, known for elegance and exceptional performance. Produced in as many as 36 examples, 10 years after her first launch in 1991, she was still proving competitive, winning the IOR championship of the year. In short, a gem not to be underestimated.

Swan 61

SWAN 61

specs: Nautor Swan; 18.55 x 5 m; 1985; German Frers

It is the mid-1980s and, Frers, it seems, does nothing but design hulls for Nautor–the 46, 51 and 651, to mention a few, have already been born–when it is the turn of another success. It may be the smallest in the 60-foot segment, but it is not the least appreciable, on the contrary. It is the Swan 61, an elegant and comfortable center-cockpit designed for offshore cruising and champagne sailing, but without disdaining racing. Pleasant, sleek and equipped to be driven short-handed, this too is a little gem from the Argentine, which launches as many as 14 hulls with the 61 in just five years.

SWAN 651

specs: Nautor Swan; 20.02 x 5.33 m; 1982; German Frers

She is the quintessential Frers signature Swan, a cruiser-racer of excellence. Safe, comfortable and performing, the Swan 651 is indeed a boat that knows its stuff, demonstrating all its pedigree between buoys as well as when cruising. More than 20 meters long, with an impressive 16.7 meters of waterline, it turns out to be a boat with exceptional pitch, still capable of saying its piece as soon as it feels the wind pick up. It was also produced in variants with (partially) retractable drift.
