The panorama concerning the Classic Boats -that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-. is a vast and ever-expanding context, composed of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to the Classic Boat Club and to our information sections, we have created a series of articles, aimed at exploring some exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating. In this particular case, we decided to look at the production signed German Frers, dwelling on only 6 boats (a hard limit), selected, one per yard, within the maximum range of 45 feet. Here, then 6 Classic Boats under 45 feet signed by Argentine magician, German Frers.
- Classic Boat Club, the community dedicated to all “vintage” sailing enthusiasts, a place for appreciating and sharing the design culture of the last century, has been born. Become a member: it’s super easy and offers lots of benefits. Find out all about it HERE!
6 outstanding hulls, signed Frers (<45′)
From 31 to 44 feet, ergo, between 9.5 and 14.5, we thought we would select 6 hulls by the Argentine master that, in many ways, come across as cult sailing. Why? Simple: because the used “Classic” market-although sometimes mistreated-offers quite a few goodies. It is full, in fact, of exceptional boats, hulls that, if one knows how to go beyond the “limit” of narrow cockpits and interior agé, can turn out to be excellent projects, ready to give exceptional moments to their owners. And, in order to be able to facilitate the knowledge of these, there is no better way than to tell about them….
ESTE 31
specs: Cantieri Navali D’Este; 9.53 x 3.20 m; 1999; German Frers
Armed at 9/10 and conceived to be an offshore cruiser-racer, the Este 31 was from the outset a highly appreciated project of the Argentine, recognized by lovers of the genre as a hull full of potential. Streamlined in its lines, proportionate on the sail plan front and, in any case, suitable for cruising, it was thus a valuable design of the late 1990s, still capable today of offering brio and comfort to those who, at the same time, wanted to try their hand between the buoys, between small cruises.

HALLBERG RASSY 36 MKI
specs: Hallberg Rassy; 10.87 x 3.55 m; 1989; German Frers
Hallberg Rassy, almost by definition, is the Bluewater yard. On the other hand, Frers, is certainly not a regatta-forgetful signature. Thus, from the combination -of immense success, moreover- was born, in 1989, a gem not to be underestimated by any means. It is the little Hallberg Rassy 36, a compact but voluminous hull, marine but fast. And, above all, in its own way also elegant, strong then with a very rational, safe deck, and provided with a central cockpit that is protected to say the least. Compounded by excellent live-work and impeccable quality, it will be a success with few equals: no less than 606 hulls produced! Today, nothing is diminished: it is a boat that is easy to handle and capable of taking us anywhere.

DUFOUR 39
specs: Dufour; 11.98 x 3.80 m; 1982; German Frers
After Michel Dufour’s exit from his own yard, the new ownership must figure out how to move to replace the hand of the brilliant designer and founder. Among the big names to pass through the yard, it will be Frers who will sign the 39-footer of 1982. Thus, one of the great Dufours of the 1980s is his, an 11.9-footer worth 160 examples produced, extremely innovative compared to the production to which it stands alongside, to which it brings a breath of fresh air, thanks to an extremely modern hull and one of the most rational layouts. Today, it is a valuable cruiser.

GRAND SOLEIL 42
specs: Pardo Shipyard; 12.65 x 4.05 m; 1989; German Frers
It is 1989 when, Cantiere del Pardo, launches the “little brother” of the Grand Soleil 52 on the market. The signature is always that of Frers, the success, equal. It is in fact the Grand Soleil 42, a gem of a boat that has earned the Pardo no less than 130 units produced. It is a boat that knows how to stand out, strong with a large single rudder wheel and impeccable, very elegant lines with a wide stern. Today, it remains a cult favorite, and one sees, rightly, quite a few of them.

FIRST 42
specs: Beneteau; 13.08 x 3.99 m; 1981; German Frers
If in 1982 the Argentine signed the French 39, by 1981 he had already ventured into transalpine shipbuilding. It was precisely in the early 1980s that he signed the First 42, a splendid cruiser-racer capable of towering above the rest of the line of the time. Elegant in its lines, exceptional under the waterline and excellent between the buoys, these in fact boast a not bad pedigree: it is the legitimate heir of Gitana VII, the Argentine’s prototype from which it takes the water lines, adapted, however, to cruise in the interior. A treat.

SWAN 44 (Mk ii)
specs: Nautor Swan; 13.44 x 4.16 m; 1996; German Frers
Second half of the 1990s, Nautor Swan and Frers are now well into their collaboration. It is in this context that an admirably crafted hull comes to life, perhaps less well known than others, but not to be forgotten. On the contrary. It is the Swan 44, later called Mk ii to differentiate it from both Frers’ previous 44 and Holland’s S&S 44. The lines are clean, elegant, but already close to the stylistic features that will characterize the beginning of the millennium, the hull is exceptional, capable of running, and comfort, in the Nautor tradition, certainly does not fail. In short, it is the classic Frers signature Swan, with an extra edge, perhaps, if in the right hands.
