The negotiation was indeed there, and we anticipated it some time ago, now Luna Rossa can come out with the official announcement: Peter Burling joins the Italian team and will participate with Luna Rossa in the America’s Cup in Naples in 2027.

A bombshell from one point of view, but one that was also predictable: after his divorce with Team New Zealand, it seemed unreal that the Kiwi star, winner as helmsman of three America’s Cups in a row, would be left without a team. Be careful, however, about the role he will have within Luna Rossa will be up for debate, because as we will explain shortly it appears highly unlikely that Burling will be on board on the AC 75.

Peter Burling, first words as a “lunatic”

I am really proud to join Luna Rossa for the 38th America’s Cup,” said Peter Burling. “Racing against this iconic team has always been thrilling, and to have the opportunity to be a part of it today is a true honor. The innovation and determination that Luna Rossa brings to the America’s Cup has always inspired me. I thank everyone for the warm welcome I have received and I look forward to working together with a team of the highest caliber like this and giving my all to help win the first America’s Cup for Luna Rossa “.

Words of circumstance certainly, but also probably those of a sailor who has always put the pursuit of victory first in his career: from the Olympic classes to the Ocean, via victorious campaigns in the America’s Cup, Peter Burling is one of the most successful ever.

Peter Burling, what role will he play in Luna Rossa?

Max Sirena introduces Peter Burling to the team.

The draft Protocol speaks clearly, according to the first rules circulated for the next Cup a component of foreign sailors is allowed on board, as long as they have not already taken part in the last America’s Cup. A rule that seems tailor-made to prevent Burling from sailing with other teams.

This, of course, does not preclude seeing him in other roles: he can contribute to the design area, and of course also to the sailing team in the development of the boat and maneuvers. In short, there are many things where Burling’s experience can lend a big hand to the Italian team if the Protocol where to confirm the ban to be on board. And still Luna Rossa is well covered in the role, with Ruggero Tita and Marco Gradoni. Burling is the icing on the cake.

Max Sirena’s comment.

We are thrilled to welcome Peter Burling“-said Max Sirena, CEO of Luna Rossa.” Peter has long been our opponent, and over the years we have come to appreciate both his extraordinary sailing talent and his fairness and sportsmanship in competition. Although his exact role is not yet defined, he will certainly be part of the sailing team, strengthening the leadership of Luna Rossa’s core group, and he will also contribute in other key areas of development. Peter brings great sporting, technical and human value, and we are confident that his presence will provide a major boost to the entire team, instilling o new energy, experience and determination in view of the challenge ahead.”
