Sparkman & Stephens Swan Rendez-Vous 2025

Organized by the S&S Swan Association, a nonprofit dedicated to celebrating the heritage and culture associated with the splendid hulls conceived and built by the Scandinavian/New Yorker duo, this 11th edition is not only yet another demonstration of excellent work, it is also a celebration of its 25th birthday. Longer by a day, the 2025 edition will therefore be all to be discovered, with hulls that are nothing short of excellent ready to give their best, both between the buoys and on the elegance front, deeply imbued in the lines of each of the participants. And, on that note, here are what boats you might encounter, should you be in the area….

S&S Swan Rendez-Vous 2025

Let’s face it: when we talk about Sparkman & Stephens’ signature Swans, we are talking about some of the most beautiful and fascinating boats that serial shipbuilding has ever produced. And that is no small feat, especially given how many they have managed to produce. These are, in fact, flawless hulls, boats designed to sail seriously, facing even seas that, most among us, perhaps would not even want to imagine. And, all seasoned with quality and class to spare. But these are also true pieces of history, creatures in their own way alive and bearers of the testament of the sailing that was. And for that, they are worth getting to know. Here, then, are the hulls in the water, and a brief hint related their history.

S&S Swan Rendez-Vous – The Boats on the Water (36-44′)

Let’s start with the origins, the birth of the myth. On the water again this year at least three goodies that are nothing short of exceptional, the first models to ever leave the yard. We are talking, of course, about the Swan 36 (10.9 x 2.94 m). Built in 90 examples between 1967 and 1970, the 36′ is the boat from which it all stems, a classic sloop of the late 1960s, characterized by a narrow beam and significant momentum. Characteristically, the raised deckhouse, typical of the period and which we would later see disappear once in the height of the 1970s.

Swan 3

Rising with the feet, the studio’s project #2150, the Swan 41 (12.5 x 3.64 m). Built in 61 examples between 1973 and 1977, she was a popular boat to say the least, strong in lines that were still classical, but already flush on deck and modern in conception and performance. Another no small treat, at least 3 examples of which turn out to be entered in this 11th edition.

Swan 41

Produced from 1969 to 1972, with as many as 67 examples launched, taking third place in length is actually the shipyard’s second hull, one of the most elegant boats to have ever touched the water: the Swan 43 (13.04 x 3.55 m). With deep soaring lines, a gorgeous stern, and an abundant beam, the 43′ is not only supremely elegant but also the emblematic hull of a now unrepeatable era. In short, a true sailing Cult. And, in Marciana Marina, you may find as many as 2 of them….

Swan 43

Numerous in this 2025 edition, a true “vintage missile”. It is, of course, the Swan 44 (13.48 x 3.83 m), produced in 76 examples between 1972 and 1975. Not only pleasing to the eye and admirably crafted, these are also a real missile among the Classics, just look at the category rankings where he participates…

S&S Swan Rendez-Vous – The Boats on the Water (47-65′)

Moving up instead to the “lighter weights,” Marciana Marina will also be host to now-legendary hulls. Among them, surely the Swan 47 (14.57 x 4.19 m), not only numerous, but nothing short of exceptional. Built beginning in 1974 and produced in 70 units by 1985, the 47′ is the quintessential Sparkman & Stephens signature Swan of the mid-1970s: unmistakable retractable deckhouse, narrow stern-almost ‘heart-shaped’-and seaworthiness to spare.

Dream, Swan 47 S&S

Next up, a “rare” hull to say the least, the Swan 55 (16.65 x 4.33 m), produced in just 16 examples between 1970 and 1974. Still strong with considerable momentum and, above all, a small deckhouse, these are not only a very elegant Swan, but also the hull from which, based on owner demands, the need to develop the legendary ’65 will arise…

Before we get to the iconic 19-meter, however, another treat among the Swan S&Ss should be seen, the Swan 57 (17.5 x 4.83). These, in fact, are the culmination of Nautor’s collaboration with S&S, an offshore hull capable of combining elegance and comfort with respectable performance. Not for nothing, it was produced in no fewer than 49 units between 1977 and 1984.

The Swan 57 Matchless

To close, the largest of the Swans scheduled to be on the water in this S&S Swan Rendez-Vous 2025, the Swan 65 (19.68 x 4.96 m), a queen among Classic Boats. Sleek, high-performing and with an unbeatable pedigree, the 65′ was produced in no fewer than 41 examples between 1971 and 1989, mainly with a ketch rig. Yet another S&S masterpiece, she earned her legendary status with the first Whitbread Round the World Race (1973), where she was, against all previous expectations, the overall winner of the edition. We do not think there is anything more to add about it….
