It used to be a purely niche sector, but today the daysailer/weekender market is a market that seems to be expanding, promoting a different model of sailboats from the rest of the market. Entering this market, which has also seen the entry of Grand Soleil with its Blue and has some landmark brands such as Saffier, this time is the British RS Sailing.
The shipyard unveiled the RS Aira 22, developed by Jos Snijders Blok, an essential, trailerable boat with simplicity in mind and designed for families, perfect for lakes or small coastal sailing. Or why not also as a school boat or for club class racing.
RS Aira 22, what a boat it is
At 6.5 meters long, 2.2 meters wide, the RS Aira has a soft hull and a vaguely retro aesthetic style. Rudder “hanging” from the transom, retractable keel with 250 kg of ballast out of the boat’s total 750. The sail plan includes a generously sized Square top mainsail, 14 sq. m., and a furling 8 jib. Thanks to generously sized quartered spreaders, there is no backstay.
The boat’s deck is all about simplicity, just pulleys and chokers to handle the rigging, which also includes a 28 sq. m. gennaker. Mast and deck rigging are supplied by Selden, with rigging ropes made of dyneema.
Inside the boat there is a small sleeping area where it is possible to rest or if necessary to sleep in the roadstead. A simple boat in short, made just for fun on day trips or little more, and as is often the case with RS also with an attractive launch price: 27,730.00 pounds, about 32,500 euros, excluding options and taxes.
Advisable to choose the electric propulsion, with retractable foot, that is offered by the shipyard, which, however, raises the price to about 52 thousand euros. Probably a full optional boat (motorization, furling, full sails with gennaker, interior and exterior cushions, would approach 60 thousand euros.
