The panorama concerning the Classic Boats -that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-. is a vast and ever-expanding context, composed of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to the Classic Boat Club and to our information sections, we have created a series of articles, aimed at exploring some exceptional hulls, projects that are fundamental to the evolution of boating. In this specific case, we decided to look at the world of dayboats, boats that, by design and intention, are born primarily for day trips. That you can then also do nautical camping on them, all the better-it’s all added value. Here, then, are five small hulls from the classic world, all between 6.6 and 7.6 meters!
- Classic Boat enthusiasts? or sailing in general? There is great news for you! 5 “vintage” dayboats for sailing for all
Fun, versatile and easily manageable, dayboats are a growing category today, strong in their practicality, whether single-handed or with friends. In a nutshell, they are boats designed for, basically, having fun sailing, whether you are with friends or not. Then, where more, where less, with good doses of comfort go into the package, but their purpose is primarily one: to get us out on the water with ease, when we want, with whom we want. Now, however, do not think dayboats are an all-today fad. Sure, you may have noticed their boom, but the world of Classic Boats offers its options, as it always does. Here, then, are 5 small “early days” dayboats, hulls that, today, are small, easy and relatively inexpensive. In short, ideal boats for newbies, novices, and all those who, without too many demands, simply want to have fun sailing.
SUN 2000
specifications: Jeanneau; 6.63 x 2.54 m; 2000; Olivier Petit
Let’s start at the beginning of this millennium, with a little gem signed Petit & Jeanneau. It is the Sun 2000, the quintessential dayboat of the year of the same name, a hull that is fast, light, and, for the more spartan, even ready to sell itself as a weekender. In short, an underrated takvikta hull but loaded with potential. Small, trailerable, canting-drifted, and with a well-organized interior and enough amenities, the Sun 2000 was indeed the hull for those who wanted to go boating without frills, without too many demands. From the lake, from the harbor, from the beach, it was, and remains, an unstoppable gem, even single-handed. In short, for the everyday, it has it all, and maybe a little more.

J/22
specifications: J-Boats; 6.86 x 2.44 m; 1985; Johnstone
Considered by many to be the simplest and most fun, above all, single handed J, the J/22 is one of America’s 1980s success stories. Inevitably signed by Johnstone, produced in over 1650 examples, it too is a trailerable hull, assembled in no time, and very capable as a daysailer. Not for nothing, so many sailing schools adopted it for training purposes, making it widespread just about everywhere. A small monotype for everyone.

FUN 23
specifications: Jeanneau; 7.11 x 2.44 m; 1982; Joubert & Nivelt
Unlike its predecessors, the Fun 23 was born with a racing disposition. Signed for Jeanneau by Joubert & Nivelt, it is precisely conceived for small, one-design fleet races. An excellent design by the French duo, it will, however, boast a recipe so simple and elementary that it will depopulate just about everywhere. And not just for racing. The planing hull, the three sails and the guarantee of speed it offers, in fact, immediately proved to be a winning formula, coupled in fact with an overall intuitive, immediate and fun boat. Not to mention the movable centreboard, a gem for trailerability. Manageable short-handed, it went far beyond its original plan, making it ideal even today for those looking for a hull that is both fast and fun, and highly manageable.

FARR 740
specifications: Plastivela; 7.4 x 2.29 m; 1980; Bruce Farr
1980s, Bruce Farr signs a hull that, at a glance, doesn’t look like his-until you look underwater at least. Aesthetics, in fact, do not make performance, something Farr instead takes good care of in designing this little fireball. A hull designed to satisfy those who simply wanted to go fast, all the time. And still does today. Indeed, this is a boat that can be taken to the limit, always easy on the helm, confident and reliable. A fun dayboat that lent itself to nautical camping, yesterday, as it does today (for the spartan).

SURPRISE
specifications: Archambault; 7.56 x 2.48 m; 1977; Michel Joubert
It was, quite simply, the best-selling daysailer of the 1970s. With as many as 1550 examples produced, Michel Joubert indeed signed a boat worthy of its name, amazing, and very fast. There were two versions of it, with a fixed or movable keel, and it was a small bolide. Even today there are fleets of Surprise racing just about everywhere, making it, quite simply, a little gem. Easy, sporty and manageable, it is still a great option today for regrouping friends and going out to “play”.
