It is not Ferrari, but in a way it is part of the same big family, Luna Rossa has in fact announced a partnership with the car brand Alfa Romeo, which will support the Italian team in the America’s Cup challenge in Naples. Not just a commercial partnership, but also a technical and technological one, since aerodynamics and technical solutions will also be discussed between Patrizio Bertelli’s sailing team and that of the automaker.
Founded in 1910 as ALFA (Anonymous Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili), it has been part of the Fiat Group, now Stellantis, since 1986 and is a company known for producing elegant cars with a sporty character.
Is Ferrari also behind Alfa Romeo?
The Agnelli and Elkann family’s passion for sailing is certainly no mystery: once it was Lawyer Gianni Agnelli, then his heirs, with Maserati and Soldini, now with Ferrari, John Elkann is a lover of racing and sailing challenges at the cutting edge of technology.
It is also no mystery that Ferrari and Luna Rossa have “sniffed each other out” before. Alfa Romeo is one of Ferrari’s partners, both car brands are part of the Stellantis Group, and who knows if the collaboration with Luna Rossa is actually broader, involving some of the Cavallino’s technicians as well.
For at least a year Alfa Romeo has been a brand under observation at Stellantis, on which the Group is studying a relaunch plan that also includes the new electric Stelvio, currently slipped to 2026. On the agenda of the new Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa, who will take the helm from next June 23, there will therefore also be a “dossier” concerning the partnership between Alfa Romeo and Luna Rossa, an agreement that is likely also part of the brand’s relaunch strategy.
What advantages for Luna Rossa? Alfa Romeo has been involved in the world of Formula 1 in the past, and is generally a brand that has had its say in the world of sports cars. The details of the deal are not known, but it is clear that the America’s Cup in Naples may be tempting in terms of visibility for the car company, and in return Luna Rossa could have a contribution in terms of aerodynamic research and development.
