And some still call it a “bathtub!” The Optimist, a school boat for generations of sailors, designed in 1947 by American Clark Mills, just 2.35 meters long, is still used today by hundreds of thousands of young sailors. What has changed in nearly eighty years? First the hull materials (from wood to fiberglass), then the shapes of the edges (rounded since the second half of the 1990s), and finally the technology of rigging, materials, and sails. Just think, for example, of CD Sails’ new sails.
The new ultralight sheets for Optimist from Armare Ropes
Or to the new line of sheets and rigging that Armare Ropes has developed in collaboration with Simone Ricci, one of the most titled and internationally known coaches of the Optimist class. Together with Ricci, who was the coach of Marco Gradoni (helmsman of Luna Rossa but above all the winner – the only one to have succeeded in history – of no less than three Optimist World Championships), Armare has devised a range that includes the new Opticore SR sheet, in the two versions 3:1 and 4:1, as well as a complete kit of technical rigging for the entire Optimist rig. Each line is designed to meet the technical needs of the most demanding sailors looking for a high-performance and durable product.
After all, Ricci explains,“In One Design classes, even a small improvement can make a difference, and it is crucial that young sailors realize this, acquiring the critical awareness that can lead them to develop their performance.”
The new Opticore SR sheet is the natural evolution of the multi-winner “Gamberus,” now in a completely revamped version: in fact, it is about 30 percent lighter than the previous version, while being stronger and performing better, maintaining the characteristics of easy handling and very low water absorption.
As per Armare Ropes “protocol,” all products are first developed and then tested by international profile athletes on race courses, optimized and finally offered on the market.
