The landscape relating to Classic Boats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, consisting of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to the Classic Boat Club and our informative sections, we have created a series of articles, aimed at exploring some exceptional hulls, projects that are fundamental to the evolution of boating. In this article, 5 less talked about hulls among those signed by Sparkman & Stephens. No Alpa or Nautor then, but rather 5 exceptional boats that are always worth knowing about.

  • Classic Boat enthusiasts? or sailing in general? There’s great news! The Classic Boat Club is born, the community dedicated to all fans of the “vintage” world, a place for appreciating and sharing the design culture of the last century. 5 Sparkman & Stephens signed off-the-chart hulls (12-16 m)

That Nautor Swan and Alpa have launched quite a few masterpieces signed by the renowned New York firm Sparkman & Stephens is, by now, common knowledge. Yet, the S&S flair has certainly not only been spent with these two firms. Of course, Dufour also had its own, with the legendary 42 Lacoste, just as the S&S34 is also very famous, but there are other hulls, less known at times, that bear the signature of the great masters. And they are worth getting to know!

Swan 36, the much-talked-about first Nautor Swan hull signed by S&S

IW-41

specifications: IW-Varvet; 12.10 x 3.50 m; 1977

Big brother to theIW-31, the IW-41 first saw the water in 1977, a full 9 years after her smaller sibling, but would in turn be a highly appreciated hull. Fast and powerful, she is indeed a boat designed for the discerning cruiser, and thus keeps in mind the constant quest for comfort and performance, drawing the best possible balance from sleek lines. The proverbial Scandinavian quality, then does the rest, resulting in a hull that is nothing short of remarkable.

IMPALA 41

specifications: Shipyard 71; 12.40 x 3.71 m; 1982

With the Impala 41 we approach the Italian twin, of the Swan 411. Slightly different from its Scandinavian counterpart, the CN71 41 is in fact revisited in lines and deck by an intervention of the same S&S studio, which is going to revise the design on the basis of the experience that emerged on the 411 and the production needs of the Italian shipyard. It will be built in a small number of examples, but will immediately demonstrate great qualities, proving to be a boat well suited to offshore sailing. Elegant and balanced, in short, it is one of the shipyard’s cult boats.

FREYA 45

specifications: Benello; 13.31 x 3.76 m; 1968

In the late 1960s, fiberglass and large-scale production were in their infancy. Against this backdrop, the Benello shipyard decided to start production of an elegant, good-pitch sloop. To do this, the best option is to turn to the best. Sparkman & Stephens are then approached and, before long, a cult miniseries is born. It is an ante-litteram cruiser-racer, a first-class IOR also designed for cruising. It is the sere of the Freya 45, today a great classic, hard to find though. Only five were made.

SOLARIS 47

specifications: Se.Ri.Gi / Solaris; 14.3 x 4.0 m; 1979

Aquileia, late 1970s. The then Se.Ri.Gi Shipyard (now Solaris), commissions the New York-based S&S firm for a 47-footer to be mass-produced. An exceptional hull was born, admirable in workmanship and the bearer of an important novelty. In the iconic studio, in fact, a young Argentine put his hand to the project. He is German Frers, whose pen stands out visibly in the design of this cult Se.Ri.Gi, the Solaris 47. Thus was born an unusual boat, marine and fast, but characterized by a different deckhouse, which would become its hallmark, however. The interior is a masterpiece of cabinet making.

BALTIC 52

specifications: Baltic Yachts; 16.00 x 4.70 m; 1990

Produced in 18 examples between 1990 and 2007, the Baltic 52 was a late design from the studio. Here, Sparkman & Stephens set the entire concept according to the emerging IMS canons, resulting in a fast, sleek hull created entirely around the needs of racing. The lines, in fact, turn out to maximize critical speed, then placing the centers of gravity as low as possible. Two separate manholes allow the crew to move around fluently, without intercepting each other, while, the maneuvers, are positioned to be usable even short handed. It does not disdain cruising, with comfortable and well-finished interiors.
