How the regatta went
During the day on Friday, a very sustained wind greeted us while setting up the VELA Cup Point, with fairly formed seas just outside the waters of Brindisi. The course of the VELA Cup Puglia, organized in collaboration with the Marina di Brindisi and the Lega Navale Section of Brindisi, also convinced many boats from out of the area to register for this year’s regatta, also benefiting from the free mooring night(as in all VELA Cup stages) offered by the Marina to those registered and the June 2 bridge, perfect for organizing a small vacation.
Given the conditions (especially sea conditions) on Friday, however, several boats did not feel up to making it to the Brindisi Marina for the regatta, but the weather forecast provided by VELA Cup partner Meteomed got it right: Saturday’s day provided the boats out on the water with a perfect opportunity to test themselves!
A sustained wind accompanied the fleet from the start, which was set in the waters in front of the Marina di Brindisi seawall, and all the way to the meda, which sent all the boats back up towards Torre Guaceto. The gusts did not stop and indeed, even reached 18-20 knots, facilitating the return towards the finish line for the first boats but also for those that remained a bit further back, which were able to benefit from a slight intensification. The wind was even throughout the race course, with few holes, providing challenging conditions and fun for even the most experienced crews.
Federico Gagliano of Circolo Vela Brindisi took to the sea (for the second year in a row) his sea wolves, a crew of eight boys aged 8 to 15. As soon as he stepped off his Blu Fantàsia, a Beneteau First 40.7, he told us, “It was a super VELA Cup again this year! The eight kids I had on board all took turns at the helm and had a great time. There was also a very challenging phase within the regatta, a four-boat engagement. Beautiful day!
