Good second for the Triton Cup, the regatta promoted by the LIFE-A-MAR NATURA2000 which again this year took the boats and crews of the VELA Cup Toscana out to sea on Sunday as well. After a great Saturday’s regatta, today’s day provided as much excitement and fun at sea, with nearly 40 boats entered, including the many Mylius, engaged in the second day of the Mylius Rendez Vous, and the legendary Vaurien, also back at sea for a second race.

How did it go at sea
What faced the boats on the water today for the Triton Cup were truly optimal conditions for racing, with light but stable winds that started up from the northeast and then immediately stabilized for the duration of the approximately 8.5-mile course. Departure and release buoy set off the Marina at Cala de’ Medici, then headed toward Chioma for the first side and back in front of the Marina breakwater. Calm seas and an 8-9 knot wind then accompanied the crews to the finish line, crossed by all the boats that started.
The first boat to cross the finish line was still Luciano Gandini’s (Mylius shipyard president) Mylius 80 Twin Soul B, but triumphant was Manticore, Franz Wilhelm Baruffaldi Preis’ Mylius 60, which won the Triton Cup on handicap time.

The LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000 project.
The project LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000 was created with the intention of promoting and enhancing the marine sites of the Natura 2000 Network, transforming them into recognizable places of interest to all, without ever forgetting their protection and conservation. And right around Cala de’ Medici, where the Triton Cup was held, there are numerous areas of great naturalistic value, perfect examples of the wealth of biodiversity that characterizes our sea.
Prominent among themis Capraia Island, of volcanic origin, with high coasts, seabed rich in Posidonia oceanica meadows and coralligenous habitats populated by Porifera. Here, the presence of Cystoseira algae testifies to the high quality of the marine environment. Some of the most fascinating species that can be spotted include the loggerhead turtle, bottlenose dolphin, lesser and greater burbot, as well as the sea jay.
No less impressive is theIsland of Gorgona, surrounded by rocky seabeds that reach 40-50 meters deep and host five underwater cavities, including the famous Sea Ox Cave. Posidonia oceanica meadows embrace the island, and coralligenous stands are particularly developed in the northern part. The fauna here is extremely rich: in addition to the loggerhead turtle and bottlenose dolphin, one can encounter the zephyrus, fin whale, the rare Pinna nobilis, corvina, and numerous species of marine and terrestrial birds such as the lesser shearwater, Queen’s hawk, hen harrier, and Corsican gull.
For those who wish to explore these treasures, theAMAR Sea LIFE app is available for Android or iOS, which allows you to discover the location of the sites, learn about their flora and fauna, and stay up-to-date on the activities and news of the LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000 project. An invitation to experience the sea in a conscious way, discovering the extraordinary biodiversity that surrounds us and contributing to its preservation.
