In 1975, the Sailing Newspaper was born with a very specific purpose. To satisfy the passion of those who live the sea. By boat and beyond. Back then they were not called that; today we call them “sea lovers.” They are that large community of 2,000,000 people who follow us every day, on all our channels.
All together for 50 years of the Sailing Newspaper
Yesterday, Saturday, May 24, at the Marina in Cala de’ Medici, those who were there — and there were many of you, hundreds and hundreds of people, colorful, wearing red shirts celebrating 50 years of the GdV — experienced the perfect day of a “sea lover.” The occasion was the big celebration for the 50th anniversary of the Journal of Sailing.
It was a celebration that began at sea, with the charge of the 85 boats for the VELA Cup Toscana(here we tell you how it went), continued ashore with the awards ceremony for the regatta and the Sailor of the Year, the most coveted prize in Italian sailing that GdV has awarded since 1991(all the winners here), and ended with the screening in the Marina di Cala de’ Medici piazza of last year’s cult film, “No More Trouble – What’s Left of a Storm” by Tommaso Romanelli, in the presence of the director. One of the most touching sailing films ever made.

This is the sail we want
A celebration that summed up the sailing we want and for which the Sailing Newspaper has been a spokesman for 50 years.
A sail by and for all: from the little Vauriens that took part in the regatta to the big Mylius (one of the highlights of the VELA Cup was the Mylius Rendez Vous, with many “giants” from the Piacenza shipyard on the water), from the Classic Boats to Riccardo De Michele‘s Vallicelli 80 H20, from Giancarlo Ghislanzoni’s fierce J/122 Chestress, which won the VELA Cup overall, to the last-place finisher, Display, Antonio Pannunzio’s Alpa 34, which had the honor of being awarded by none other than two living sailing legends, Max Sirena and Torben Grael.
That’s right, because the party was an opportunity for sea lovers to meet live those who have made sailing history, as well as to see old friends or challenge each other among the buoys at sea.
A veritable “parterre de roi” who, for the 50th anniversary of the GdV, flocked to Cala de’ Medici and “mingled” with the sailing people.
Those who came to the party, which was open to all, were able to chat and take a selfie with the aforementioned Sirena and Grael (the latter did the VELA Cup and the Mylius Rendez Vous at the helm of Luciano Gandini’s Twin Soul B).
With renowned ocean sailor Andrea Mura, with “lunarossians” Giulia Conti and Vittorio Bissaro, with sailing champions such as Silvia Sicouri, Medea Falcioni, Rebecca Geiger, Chicco Isenburg.
And again, with the top designers and inventors who have led the evolution of sailing over the past 50 years-Claudio Maletto, Giovanni Ceccarelli, Umberto Felci, Andrea Vallicelli, Gianni Cariboni, just to name a few!
A sea lover and boat party
Not only a party of and for sea lover. But also a celebration for all participating boats, regardless of age, “philosophy,” size, din design: for the aforementioned Mylius (from Twin Soul B to Jecalù, fresh from launching) and Vaurien – who celebrated the victory of “their” Francesco Graziani and Marta Delli, awarded the Sailor of the Year in the Passion categoris -, for the many X-Yachts in the race, as the VELA Cup was the occasion for a gathering of Danish shipyard owners.
For the Classic Boats, which on this occasion were visited by our technical committee and registered in the Classic Boat Historical Register: Clan, Impala 36; Pickwick, Comet 910; Mon Chichi, Grand Soleil 34; Display, Alpa 34; Freedom, Grand Soleil 52; Nos Dois, Franchini Atlantis; Sin Sations, Irwin 52; Maupiti, Contest 36S; Ulysses, Swan 60. They added to the already large Classic Boat Club register.
Finale in beauty
Back to the evening. After the Sailor of the Year, everyone to the movies with a screening in the piazza of “No More Trouble.” A beautiful sea story (that of Andrea Romanelli, who disappeared in the Atlantic in 1998 while attempting the ocean record on Soldini’s Row, told by his son Tommaso) at the end of a perfect sea lover’s day.
Thank you to all who came. To those who could not come. To those who follow us. Because we will never tire of repeating it. Without you, the Journal of Sailing would never have been born. Next up is the special Anniversary 50 Years GdV issue to be released in July on newsstands and digitally, and from now until the end of the year, the special “GdV 5o years” section of our website, which every day is populated with stories from our historical archive!
