SoloSailor Andrea Lodolo has just completed qualifying 4736 miles solo in the Atlantic qualifying for the Golden Globe Race 2026, the nonstop solo round-the-world race aboard vintage hulls with no electronics on board. He will represent Italy in the world’s most challenging and adventurous solo round-the-world race. SoloSailor Andrea Lodolo has just returned to Brest, after 4736 miles solo in the Atlantic, he is the first Italian to qualify for the Golden Globe Race 2026, the solo round-the-world race on classic boats with pre-Electronic Age sailing techniques, 30,000 miles nonstop and unassisted.

In this lengthy interview from ashore, Andrea explains what the GGR2026 qualification is, tells us about his course and how he weathered the storm, gives us a wealth of advice and thoughts on how to sail solo for weeks on end in the ocean, but most importantly tells us everything he broke down and how he found himself sailing without power for almost a week, literally by candlelight.
“The storm left me without power.”
In this photo we see Andrea’s chart table at night, lit only by a candle. In fact, ocean waves damaged her hydrogenerator, the failing engine could not recharge the batteries, and the auxiliary solar panel was also out. Aboard Bibi, his 11-meter Rustler 36, “the SoloSailor” faced this and many other difficulties, and he tells us about them in the video exclusively to the Journal of Sailing, in a deliberately “slow” and detailed interview that all sailing enthusiasts and enthusiasts and cannot miss.
