In July, the not-to-be-missed 50th Anniversary Special Issue of the Journal of Sailing comes out on newsstands and digitally. Live, the sneak peek of what the collector’s issue of the Journal of Sailing will look like. A special newspaper you don’t want to miss. We explain why

Half a century of sailing in the July Special Issue of the GdV. Unmissable

One says 50 years, evabbé. Then he says half a century and the perspective changes. Half a century is really a long time for people who live with smartphones in their ears.

Half a century ago, the Comet 910 was unveiled at the Genoa Boat Show.

Half a century ago you went to sea with a radiogoniometer (if you were heading on the Giraglia you had to point the arrow of the instrument well to hear clear: beeep-bep-bep-bep). Half a century ago the more technological people had a Loran device (which didn’t pick up everywhere). Half a century ago to call home you had to go through, via radio, the kind gentleman at the nearest Radio Station who would dial the number for you, then “give you traffic” and put the call through.

The Special 50 Years GdV issue will be divided into four sections. We will reveal everything in a few days

Half a century ago Mauro Pelaschier was 26 years old and racing on the Finn. Half a century ago the fight among dinghies was between the Flying Junior and the Vaurien . Half a century ago Paul Elvström had already won four gold medals at the Olympics.

Half a century ago Il Giornale della Vela was born, and in the special Anniversary 50 Years issue to be released in July, we have tried to tell you what has happened in these 50 years by rereading the pages of the magazine created by Mario Oriani.

Great sailing stories not to be missed

It is the result of research and selection that was truly not easy. Because, in passing through the 554 issues of the Journal of Sailing, the pleasure of rereading pages never forgotten or savoring again the words of so many colleagues and friends was overlaid by the anxiety of being able to trace a broadside that, with all the limitations imposed by “paper” spaces, could really lead to a goal.

That of creating a portrait, inevitably partial but as vivid as possible, of a world that has changed profoundly, in Italy and around the world, over these decades. The great races, the champions, the adventures, the ever-new technologies, the evolution of hulls and equipment as Il Giornale della Vela has gradually recounted them, also through unmissable images.

To revive that event, that discovery, that encounter; to tell that story again to those who were there then or, in our own small way, to make those who have not yet heard of it discover it. It is a laborious job to summarize, through a few examples, the long history of a world with a thousand facets and a thousand interpretations as that of sailing.

We tried and we hope we succeeded, you be the judge! Above all, to have succeeded in conveying the passion that lies within everyone who makes and has made The Journal of Sailing. For half a century now (mamma mia!).

Emilio Martinelli
