The program of the VELA Cup Toscana Special Edition 50
The long weekend of the GdV-branded VELA Cup Special Edition 50 kicks off on Friday, May 23 with the opening of the VELA Cup Point: here it will be possible to complete registration and pick up gift bags. For the Cala de’ Medici stop, all crew members will receive free official polo shirts/ t-shirts of the VELA Cup Special Edition 50. On this unique occasion, exclusive celebratory polo shirts with the logo of the 50th anniversary of the Giornale della Vela will also be distributed, made in the unmistakable “VELA red,” the symbolic color of our newspaper since 1975, the year in which the famous designer Bob Noorda conceived the logo that still accompanies us today. These polo shirts are unique pieces: they will never be produced again!
Saturday morning at sea for the regatta
After the crews’ briefing at 9:30 a.m., at 11 a.m. it’s off to the water for the regatta, with the coastal course designed for you along the Costa degli Etruschi (which lasts a maximum of 4 hours) and takes you to discover the Gulf of Castiglioncello. You start in front of the waters of Marina Cala de’ Medici and, after turning the disengagement buoy, you head for the second buoy off Vada, a hamlet of Rosignano Solvay. For the third buoy you head back in a northerly direction, the point where the third buoy is placed is in front of the port of Chioma, mouth of the stream of the same name, after which you return in front of the Marina di Cala de’ Medici turning the disengagement buoy.
Saturday afternoon ashore with the “elite” of sailors
The afternoon starts with the VELA Cup award ceremony, followed by drinks and food for all, and then there is the big award ceremony for the Sailor of the Year Special Edition 50 GDV. A few names of the sailors you might meet in Cala de’ Medici, just to make you curious: Max Siren (Luna Rossa), Vincenzo Honored (Latin Rascal), Rebecca Geiger, Medea Falcioni, ocean navigators such as Matthew Miceli, talented racers such as Gabrio Zandonà e Torben Grael Who will be engaged in the Mylius Rendez Vous.
Lots of boats, all different, doing battle on equal terms
The VELA Cup Toscana fleet, as always, will be diverse and colorful: from family cruisers to the most fierce racing boats, not forgetting the Classic Boats, which only on this occasion will be able to register for free with the Official Classic Boat Registry.
The boats of the Mylius Rendez Vous
Also at VELA Cup Toscana is the Mylius Rendez Vous, which will allow you to see some of the most beautiful boats produced by the shipyard at sea. A few examples? Twin Soul B, 80-foot “bolide.” Schorch, stunning Mylius 66 RS. And more: Manticore, Jecalu, Sud (Mylius 60), Oscar3 (Mylius 65, winner in class 3 at the last Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup 2024 in Porto Cervo), My Delight (Mylius FD 60).
All boats, of all ages and sizes (and no tonnage certificate or paperwork needed) are invited to register and participate.
Would you like to know what are some of the other boats you will be able to compete against at sea(truly on equal terms, thanks to the secret fee system we have developed for the VELA Cup 2025)? We can tell you that p confirmed the presence of Chestress 3, Giancarlo Ghislanzoni’s J/122 winner of the 151 Miglia and many regattas; Mascalzone Latino, Vincenzo Onorato’s three-time world champion Farr 40, refitted for the occasion in ultra-race trim; or H2o, Riccardo De Michele’s Vallicelli 78 (23.80 m), six-time winner of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo.
And then there will be the many X-Yachts present for the gathering of the Italian X-Yacht Owners Association, the legendary Vaurien, with the class providing some boats for the occasion for those who want to try their hand at the VELA Cup (write to info@vaurien.it).
Entertainment at sea and on the big screen
Saturday evening will conclude with a screening of the biggest sailing film of the year (according to the Journal of Sailing). The story of Andrea Romanelli, a sailor who passed away in 1998 while aboard the Open 60 Fila, told by his son (and director) Tommaso Romanelli. The screening of “No More Trouble – What Remains of a Storm” is scheduled for 8 p.m.
