The Regatta of the Three Gulfs has started in Naples., one of the most historic and coveted offshore regattas run in Italy, on the classic 170-mile Naples-Ponza-Li Galli-Naples route. An edition that starts on the wings of the excitement of the announcement of Naples 2027 as the next home of the America’s Cup. As many as 104 boats are at the start, divided between the ORC fleet of 74 and 30 maxis that will have in the long the offshore test of the European Maxi Championship organized by the International Maxi Association.
Regatta of the Three Gulfs – A Dream Fleet
This is a decidedly special edition, both in terms of the number of participants, the excitement associated with the announcement of the America’s Cup, and the weather conditions that are expected to be as challenging as ever. And then a fleet with enormous quality, with the best maxis in the world arriving in the Gulf of Naples to do battle.
Any names? ARCA, Magic Carpet E, Scallywag, My Song, Galateia, Capricorn, Bullitt, Bella Mente, the battle for real-time victory this time is more open than ever.
The ORC fleet will not be outdone, with several offshore specialists making the final victory on handicap time as interesting and unpredictable as ever.
Weather coach Gianni Bianchini, who follows several of the teams in the regatta, analyzed the weather scenario ahead for this edition of Three Gulfs.
Regatta of the Three Gulfs: the weather scenarios
The race looks very interesting meteorologically and strategically. The departure will occur under the influence of the tail of a depression system that starting from North Africa has crossed the Ionian area toward Greece and beyond. This will generate, at the moment, a relatively intense NE wind with winds of about 15 to 20 knots co gusts on the way to Ponza that could also be very sustained. The departure of the depression will give way to a new high pressure system that will slowly stretch out into the day of the 17th bringing a classic scenario of transitions beginning in the morning and seeing the formation of frequent areas with weakening by Saturday. Probably the only hopes for movement may lie in the thermally driven winds. All in all, a varied situation in which somewhat more challenging reading scenarios are determined, especially for boats that anticipate longer travel times and will have to deal with slowdowns from the incoming anticyclone .
This is the analysis of weather coach and route expert Gianni Bianchini.
