After the great interest generated by the Classic Boat column and, above all, in response to the need to enhance and restore dignity to the great hulls of the past, by now you know, the Classic Boat Club was born (freely accessible until the end of the month). In a nutshell, an attempt to celebrate and certify as historic all the boats (production and non-production) that have made sailing great and made us sailors fall in love.
Even more, however, the Classic Boat Club is a gathering place, a platform that aims to unite enthusiasts by offering tools dedicated to reenacting history, telling the story of beautiful boats, and, why not, facilitating as much knowledge as maintenance, purchase or upkeep. Among the most interesting initiatives contained here is the Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value., a reality dedicated to certifying the historical and collector relevance of individual hulls, emphasizing their new value. But what are the benefits? What boats can be part of it and how do you sign up? We explain in this article.
Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value is born: here’s what to know
Let’s start with the basics. First of all, what does the Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value consist of? Fundamentally, it is very simple. It is a registry designed to recognize the value and historical and collector’s relevance of so many of the outstanding boats designed in the last century, whether they are production or one-offs. In short, Classic Boats, that is, hulls whose design was conceived at least 25 years ago and whose launching occurred from 1967 onward. The enrollment formula, however, is simple: as long as a hull respects-insofar as it makes sense-the original design canons, and as long as it is in good condition, if it falls within the age range, it can enroll in the Registry. All it takes is to fill out an online form, thus registering with the Classic Boat Club as an Owner Member, or ‘owner members.’ The boat, will then be examined by a dedicated team and, if congruent with the parameters, can be enrolled, accessing all the benefits attached, as well as acquiring a value of historical and collector relevance, increasing its value on the market. But let’s take a closer look at what these are and what boats have already joined.
Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value: how it works / requirements
As we have seen, the Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value is designed for all those boat owners who are pleased to enhance the value of their hull. But the issue, first and foremost, goes one step further. On the one hand, there is membership, the issuance of a certificate and plaque, and benefits (which we will see later); on the other, there is the pleasure of sharing and the celebration of nautical culture. This last front, is the first to start with.
The Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value, in fact, is also a ‘searchable body,’ an online platform to which all Classic Boat Club members have access, whether they are registered as Owner Members, and thus owners, or enthusiasts, ergo registered as Crew Members (find out how to join here). Basically, this is a Classic Boat Club page apt to collect all registered boats, certifying them as being of Historical and Collector’s Value. Here, you will find a list of all the hulls and, by selecting individual boats, you can discover their pictures, history and details, as told by their individual owners. It is, in this sense, a place for sharing. But it also has its advantages, as we will see shortly.
In terms of Requirements, however, the Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value is designed so that any sailboat, of any size, can be accessed, as long as it is at least 25 years old from the date of the launching of the first example in the series launched by the yard (not the individual boat), starting in 1967 (unless it is a one-off, in which case, it is the date of launching that counts). That said, the requirements are minimal: the boat must not have been modified to such an extent as to distort the original design, although modifications to improve the original design itself are acceptable, as long as they do not become distorting.
- As of today, and until the end of the month, the registry is accessible to everyone. You can find it HERE
