Goatherds from around the world, from yesterday/ today/ tomorrow, this is a call for you. On the weekend of June 27-29 there is a regatta for you to “go back to the roots” of your passion to celebrate yourself, right there where you learned to sail. It is the VELA Cup Sardinia 1 and we explain why you cannot miss it.
The highlight is for Saturday, June 28, when the VELA Cup Sardegna 1 regatta will take place, right in front of the Maddalena archipelago, in Porto Rafael, in front of the headquarters of the legendary Centro Velico Caprera, which made you better sailors (and people).
The Friends of Caprera have given their patronage to the VELA Cup at the end of June, and there will be special awards to the “Caprerini” who are on board the best-ranked boats. On the stage at the awards party the stars will also be you, the Caprera students.
Dear Caprerini, if you haven’t figured it out yet, the VELA Cup Sardegna 1 party (in Porto Rafael) is made just for you! All you have to do is sign up now, in the meantime we’ll explain how it works.
Everything you need to know about the Porto Rafael VELA Cup in 7 questions
Where and when?
The weekend of the VELA Cup Sardinia 1 takes place from Friday, June 27 to Sunday, June 28 in Porto Rafael-Palau, in northeastern Sardinia, right in front of Caprera, home of Italy’s most famous sailing school, Centro Velico Caprera. A unique location, among crystal clear waters, wild nature and historical monuments, such as Garibaldi’s house and tomb!
The regatta will take place on Saturday, June 28 between 11 am and 3:30 pm. Crew briefing at 09:30 am.
Who can participate?
Any kind of boat and no tonnage certificate is required. From dinghies to maxi yachts, it’s a democratic event! And there are prizes for (almost) everyone, both for results on the water (balanced thanks to the new VELA Cup compensation system to balance each boat’s performance as much as possible) and by drawing lots. And in addition to the two categories Cruising and Sport Boat, prizes are also awarded for “vintage” hulls, the Classic Boat!
What about moorings and anchorages?
Porto Rafael Marina is offering free moorings for one night to all crews coming from outside the area to participate in the VELA Cup (subject to availability).
What will the route be like?
The regatta kicks off from the charming and welcoming Marina of Porto Rafael, strategically located for exploring the Maddalena archipelago. It immediately leaves the coast pointing south, until it reaches the splendid Rada di Mezzo Schifo, which lies just west of the center of Palau and its famous gulf, a popular destination for sailing enthusiasts. From here, the route veers decisively north, with destination the west coast of the island of La Maddalena and, in particular, the scenic Cala Francese, an enchanting bay set between granite rocks and crystal clear waters. After passing this stretch, proceed west to circumnavigate the island of Spargi, one of the pearls of the Sardinian archipelago. Passing also theislet of Spargiotto, you veer south again, skirting Secca Corsara and Punta Coda Sardegna, until you return in front of the Marina di Porto Rafael.
How do I sign up? How much does it cost?
One registers online at the VELA Cup website or directly in Porto Rafael starting Friday afternoon, June 27. Registration starts at 110 euros.
Are there any prizes?
Almost every crew is rewarded at the VELA Cup! You don’t just win at sea, but also for just participating, thanks to the valuable raffle prizes offered by our partners. And then, for all registered crews, there is the very rich Gift Bag, which is offered to every boat: a kind of wonder bag with useful and really unique gadgets, the legendary VELA Cup T-shirt and a copy of the Sailing Newspaper.
Is there a buffet? What about music?
In the afternoon after the regatta there will be music, food and drinks for all crews-it is the perfect time to relax, and also to get to know the other participating crews. Then in the evening the party continues with the evening and DJ set organized for guests by Rafael’s Legacy.
Isn’t the regatta at sea enough for you? For those registered for the VELA Cup in Porto Rafael it doubles with the“Regatta in the Kitchen“! Once the regatta is over, in fact, the “competition” continues ashore thanks to the historic Sardinian company Nieddittas, which will be a stage partner and will provide each VELA Cup crew with an ingredient to be enhanced within a dish: mussels. There will be a jury ready to taste – and evaluate – all the dishes of the crews participating in the challenge.
