Luca Rosetti’s Class 40 Maccaferri is a reality, the official presentation of the project of the oceanic winner of the last Mini Transat and “our” Sailor of the Year 2025 took place in Genoa. A project with an oceanic scope, which will see the Romagnolo engaged in major international ocean races in the next two years, but which also talks about the environment, innovation and monitoring of the seas. SOON ON OUR SOCIAL CHANNELS THE INTERVIEW WITH LUCA ROSETTI.
For Luca Rosetti there will be just a few days of training on the new boat, but very soon we will already see him racing here in the Mediterranean, we tell you where.
The Mediterranean debut: the Paprec 600 Saint-Tropez
Maccaferri Futura’s sporting christening will take place on May 19 with the Paprec 600 Saint-Tropez, an offshore regatta that represents one of the most fascinating races on the Mediterranean calendar. Organized by the Yacht Club de Saint-Tropez, the competition winds its way along a 600-nautical-mile course, touching on some of the most picturesque areas of the western Mediterranean Sea. The regatta takes place in doubles, testing both the physical endurance and tactical skills of the crews. For Rosetti, it will be an opportunity to test the potential of the new Class 40 in real conditions, comparing himself with Europe’s best ocean sailors. With him will be Yaël Poupon, boat captain of Maccaferri Futura. Once the regatta is over, the team’s base of operations will move to Lorient, Brittany.
The sports program
The sporting calendar will continue in late June with the Les Sables-Horta-Les Sables, a two-stage Atlantic race, both 1,270 nautical miles long: the first from Les Sables d’Olonne to Horta on the island of Faïal in the Azores; the second from Horta to Les Sables d’Olonne. At the end of July, Rosetti will be with the crew at the start of the prestigious 608-mile Rolex Fastnet Race, and he will conclude 2025 with the Transat Café de l’Or Le Havre Normandie, which will take him in doubles to Martinique. In 2026, highlights include the RORC Caribbean 600, one of the most important offshore sailing events internationally, organized by the prestigious RORC, the Royal Ocean Racing Club, in association with the Antigua Yacht Club, and preparation for the legendary Route du Rhum, which will start in late November from France and finish in Guadeloupe.
The science project for monitoring the health of the oceans and the human body
During the event, Arianna Liconti, marine biologist and scientific coordinator of Maccaferri Futura, detailed the scientific project to protect the oceans. Thanks to scientific collaboration with theUniversity of Milano-Bicocca, Rosetti will test innovative tools and citizen science models for air and seawater sampling on board the vessel while underway. The goal is to develop standardized protocols aimed at measuring the presence of anthropogenic contaminants and identifying molecules emitted from the marine environment, thus defining the health of the oceans by characterizing “their breath.”
Next, the newSailingBox from Danish innovation platform SOOP, which collects physical ocean data, will be installed on the boat, also testing sensors from Nesa, a company active in providing solutions for environmental and industrial monitoring and Early Warning systems and part of the Maccaferri Group. In addition, eddy from start-up Oceano Vox will store and share boat navigation data. The sensors will then be pooled and centralized through Navico Group, a leading global marine instrument company. The oceanographic data, shared in real time with the scientific community through the European EMODnet Physics platform, will be used to better understand the health of the ocean to identify patterns and drive models and forecasts, with a focus on the climate crisis.
