The landscape relating to Classic Boats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, consisting of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Your Classic Boats and the new Classic Boat Club,,, we have created a series of articles, aimed, yard by yard, or intended use by intended use, at exploring some exceptional hulls, key projects in the evolution of boating. On the heels of the previous 30 articles (which you can find at the bottom of this one), it is now the turn of 5 exceptional Classics, selected from a segment of hulls that, from the very first conception, are intended to offer everything you need to leave your moorings and never stop again. Here, in a nutshell, are 5 Classic Boats from 16 to 20 meters to cruise the world without stress.

5 boats to sail around the world in serenity (16-20 meters)

In the previous article we looked at 5compact Globetrotters, between 9 and 15 meters, and we can say without too much trouble that size does not make that much of a difference. It is equally true, however, that 16 meters and more, will probably be more comfortable than 9 or 10, or so. Then there will be exceptions, but the average dictates that, a hull of more feet, not only theoretically has more wheelbase, but also more space. And, if we wanted to go around the world with the hull in question, certainly these are data to keep in mind, if the budget allows. But not only that. For that, here are 5 Classic Boats over 16 meters that, volumes and pitch aside, are the top for tackling the watery side of the globe with sufficient peace of mind.

SUPER MARAMU / SM2000

specifications: Amel; 16.00 x 4.60 m; 1989; Amel & Carteau

In the 1980s, Amel launched the legendary Maramu 46, an exceptional 13.8-meter that immediately became among the best bluewater boats around at the time. Appreciated, sold in 288 units, it is a boat that wants an encore. Amel didn’t hold back and, in collaboration with Carteau, launched its flagship version in 1989. It is the Super Maramu, at 16 meters, the brand’s largest bluewater. Needless to say, she becomes the quintessential ‘living-aboard’ symbol. If you wanted a boat on which to live and explore the world, she was it. An unprecedented success, she will be reimagined again with the new millennium, giving birth to the Super Maramu 2000. Simply put, a 400-produced cult…

HALLBERG RASSY 53

specifications: Hallberg Rassy; 16.44 x 4.64 m; 1992; German Frers

In 1992 the largest Hallberg Rassy ever built, a Frers signature masterpiece, the flagship of the beginning of the decade. In short, it is one of the immense successes of the Frers-Hallberg Rassy duo. Just think of the numbers: it is a 53-footer sold in as many as 88 units… But the quality, after all, justifies the success. Comfortable, seaworthy and safe, she was the pinnacle of the pairing of the two parties, a hull of excellence and absolutely perfect for anyone looking for a safe, elegant and voluminous bluewater. Absurdly, but not so absurdly, every point from that time still applies today. Great boat.

OYSTER 55

specifications: Oyster; 17.15 x 4.8 m; 1986; Holman & Pye

1986, Oyster launches an exceptional treat. Maybe they already know, maybe they don’t. The fact remains that, signed by Jolman & Pye, the Oyster 55 will be a jaw-dropping hull: it will be built in well over 50 examples. The initial goal was easier said than done: to satisfy a specific need of the shipyard, to bring to market a 50-foot bluewater that could simultaneously be safe, seaworthy, elegant and fast. Not an easy request to satisfy, but H&P signs the miracle, giving birth to a cruiser with great qualities and buildable even on a semi-custom basis. A great success not for nothing. It is valid to this day.

HALLBERG RASSY 62

specifications: Hallberg Rassy; 18.88 x 5.15 m; 1997; German Frers

Few shipyards can share the reputation that Hallberg Rassy has. After all, he is famously the brand of bluewater, the globetrotters par excellence, the globetrotting boats over all. And in 1997 he wanted to return, once again, confirmation of that. Signed, as is now tradition, by Frers, the Scandinavian brand launches ua real treat. A colossus takes to the sea. It is the Hallberg Rassy 62, a flagship of no less than 18.88 meters, and it follows tradition: it is comfortable, it is marine and it goes everywhere. It was not only a success, it was flagship of the year! Not for nothing, she would then be built until 2011, and in as many as 25 examples. A small masterpiece by the Hallberg Rassy / Frers duo.

OYSTER 62

specs: Oyster; 19.28 x 5.39 m; 2000; Rob Humphreys

In this case, let the numbers do the talking. The Oyster 62 is indeed the real monster of 2000. Globetrotter is a reduction. Few similar boats, after all, are capable of putting over 200 miles under the keel in a single day, definitely no small feat given her size and intended use. It is not a racing hull, but he doesn’t know that. The secret, in this case, is Humphreys, who here signs another jewel, a hull made for living aboard, for going anywhere, and doing so not only with class, but also in a sporting manner. Indeed, there are ARC victories under her belt, victories at Antigua Sailing Week and Arctic voyages up to 80 degrees north… Quite simply, an unstoppable boat.
