Magic Carpet is an iconic name in the sailing world, telling the story of legendary and unmistakable boats belonging to British owner Sir Lindsay Owen Jones. Another chapter has begun; the new Magic Carpet 100, 30 meters in length, built by the Italian Persico Marine designed by Guillaume Verdier. The boat made its debut, under the name Magic Carpet E (Does the letter E stand for Evolution? ed.), at the PalmaVela regattas in Palma de Mallorca, the classic spring event that also gathers Maxis.
It was a bitter sweet debut, because after winning the first two races, the boat in the third one had an accident, which precluded the continuation of the event due to some damage to the rig. Magic Carpet forced an entry at the start on the Botin 65 Spirit of Lorina, which in turn, in the opinion of the Jury after the obvious protest, did not keep adequately apart. Disqualification, and withdrawal from the event, for both boats, which generated extensive discussion on the dock and on the web in light of the new Rule 14.
Magic Carper E – The new “flying carpet”
The hull is 30.48 meters long and 7.20 meters wide with the 37-ton displacement and a draft of 7.5 meters. The owner asked for the fastest possible 100-foot IRC hull to participate in maxi, Inshore and offshore racing, mainly in the Mediterranean but not only, without neglecting some cruising. A boat that would be higher performing still than the already legendary Magic Carpet Wally 100. Space therefore for a canting keel, which includes the possibility of also moving the bulb, not only to optimize the righting of the boat, but also to reduce the draft if necessary around 4 meters and be able to enter ports such as Saint Tropez.
And again, the deck is made of cork instead of the teak used on the previous Magic Carpet, to reduce the weight of the boat, and to optimize the work of the keel when it is angled there is also a canard, a centerboard that goes underwater when the keel is not working amidships. Lastly, the on-board hydraulic system does not rely on diesel generators, but on two electric motors.
