Classic Boat Club
The Classic Boat Club is born!

The year 2025 marks the 50th birthday of the Sailing Newspaper. But not only that. In fact, the brand new Classic Boat Club is born!

After all, how better to celebrate such a milestone than by celebrating the real players who made it possible, the boats themselves? Therefore, 2025 is also the launch year of the Classic Boat Club by GdV, the new community dedicated to Classic Boats and all enthusiasts, new as well as ‘old’… Below we explain how it works. In the meantime, however, find the Classic Boat Club at www.classicboatgdv.com

CLASSIC BOAT CLUB – The community for all sailing enthusiasts

Let’s start with the basics. The Classic Boat Club is the result of an initiative we have been thinking about for a long time. It was born inspired by our reviews on the world of Classic Boats, a column that we have now carried on for more than 2 years and that has seen you passionate in the tens of thousands. Given the importance of keeping tradition and culture alive, a new community was thus born dedicated to all of you enthusiasts and, why not, also to those boats that make us (re)fall in love every day. It is precisely the new Classic Boat Club, a place where to make known, deepen, enhance and tell about the world of the beautiful serial and one-off boats of the last century: the Classic Boats. But that’s not all, because the Club also offers so much more! For example? If you are a Classic Boat Club member, you receive a free subscription to the Journal of Sailing, print and digital, to name but one…

CLASSIC BOAT CLUB | HOW IT WORKS

The spirit of the Classic Boat Club is very simple: consists of a website dedicated to telling and enhancing the world of classic boats, with a twist. We also want to offer services and benefits to all those who keep both the passion and the boats alive. But let’s start with the boats, the Classic Boats. Classic Boats are those boats that, either mass-produced or one-off, have been launched since 1967 and are at least 25 years old from the date of their first launch. The 1967 watershed comes by convention: that is the year when large-scale mass production began. The 25 years, on the other hand, is inspired by the automotive world, which defines as ‘classic’-or ‘historic’-cars that are at least 20 years old. That said, how does the Classic Boat Club work?

The mechanism by which the Club works is easy: we have given birth to an online platform where, not only can you find illustrative and detailed fact sheets of the greatest boats, discussion forums, sales announcements, relevant information, and assistance in finding boardings and/or crews for regattas, etc., but where you can also access a whole range of extra elements.

First and foremost, the Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value, a reality dedicated to certifying the historical and collectible relevance of individual hulls, emphasizing their new value and assisting through appraisals, insurance and brokerage agreements. A Registry, however, visible and explorable to all members, structured so that the images, history and characteristics of each individual boat can be celebrated among all enthusiasts. But the extras do not end there. In fact, by signing up, either as owners or as individual enthusiasts, the benefits continue.

– DISCOVER ALL THE BENEFITS, WHETHER YOU HAVE A BOAT OR NOT

The page dedicated to the Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value found on the Classic Boat Club. From this you can then access the description, history and individual details of each boat. As well as find out which ones are for sale.

OWNER & CREW MEMBER | MEMBERSHIP & BENEFITS

To join the Classic Boat Club, we have provided two different ways. On the one hand, the ‘basic’ version, open to everyone. Because you don’t need to have a boat to be a member, you just need to share the passion. Here, then, anyone can join as a “Crew Member”, thus gaining access to the entire information system of the site, with the possibility of access to reserved services and earning the membership Crew Card dedicated.

Classic Boat Club Owner and Crew Cards

On the other hand, owners who wish to register their boat with the registry will be able to do so as “Owner Member”, retaining all the benefits of Crew Member, with the addition of a number of benefits for them and their boat, starting with membership in the Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value all the way up to the Free participation in all Vela Classic regattas and events organized in conjunction with the seven Vela Cup distributed in all the most beautiful places in Italy. Of course, dedicated card for “Owners” as well, to which is also added the ‘ certificate of registration and the personalized nameplate certifying the boat as registered and meeting the parameters of historical value of the Official Classic Boat Registry.

– Learn about the benefits of being an OWNER MEMBER

In addition to a Nameplate for your Classic Boat, you will receive the Certificate of Historical and Collector’s Significance, the certificate indicating your boat’s registration in the Official Register of Classic Boats of Historical Value, demonstrating the congruity of the boat’s preservation with respect to design standards (A4, sent by courier).

OWNER MEMBER | REGISTER YOUR CLASSIC BOAT

Signing up is very easy, just go to www.classicboatgdv.com and select the desired membership, Owner, in the case of owners. The process is simple: just fill out the form and enter the necessary photos, all online. Within 15 days of entering the required material, the Evaluation Committee will provide its opinion. In fact, the boat must not have been modified to such an extent that it is distorted from the original design. Upon a positive outcome, you will receive confirmation and be able to proceed with entry in the Official Register.

And, on the occasion of the Vela Cup Toscana, this year’s 50th Anniversary Tribute Special Edition of the GDV (with all the sailors who, in history, have won Sailor of the Year invited), you can have your Classic Boat inspected on-site, thus gaining access, immediately, to the Official Registry!

But, remember, the Club’s benefits are not limited to the Registry! A number of examples contemplate:

  • Print and digital subscription to the Journal of Sailing;
  • Plaque and Certificate of Certification of Historical and Collector Value for your boat;
  • Free participation in the Vela Cups;
  • Free access to our platforms for boat buying and selling research;
