FARR 30

The landscape relating to Classic Boats-that is, production boats over twenty-five years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, we have created a series of articles, aimed, yard by yard, or intended use by intended use, at exploring some exceptional hulls, projects that are fundamental to the evolution of boating. In the wake of the previous 30 articles (which you will find at the bottom of this one), it is now the turn of 5 ‘mini’ boats, but great in concept. Here, then, are 5 exceptional vessels that, despite their age, will satisfy the racer site in each of you.

  • Are you looking for a Classic Boat? Do you want to sell one? Use our Used Boat Market! It is the perfect place for anyone looking for a Classic Boat to buy, as well as the perfect platform for those who have a desire or need to sell their vintage gem. And, using it, it’s as simple as that!

5 small racing behemoths from 6.5 to 9.5 meters

From the great Mini-Transat classics of the mid-1990s to the 9-meter missiles signed by the master of the genre, Bruce Farr, size matters less here than ever. Of course, if you also wanted to use them to comfortably go on vacation, you’ve got the wrong article (more on that coming), but if you’re looking for pure adrenaline and possibly sleeping on wet sails doesn’t particularly bother you, you’re in the right place. Here are 5 exceptional vessels for the racer in you.

POGO 6.50

specifications: Pogo Structure; 6.50 x 2.97 m; 1994; Pierre Rolland

1995: The Mini Transat is won by a prototype, Amnesty International, which proves to be an extremely successful design. Signed by Pierre Rolland, it proves to be the fastest and most versatile, and will immediately be offered in a small series of 25 hulls. Goodness me, it is so outstanding that it obliges a second series: the hulls produced will thus become as many as 124. Thus was born the Pogo 6.50, one of the best-known designs on the 1990s Mini Transat front.

POGO 8.50

specifications: Pogo Structure; 8.50 x 3.60 m; 1999; Pierre Rolland

2001: c‘is a Pogo as boat of the year. It is the little 8.50. Produced in no less than 180 examples, again signed by Rolland and on the strength of a major victory won within months of the first launch (Michel Mirabel, first place at the 1999 Transquadra Solo with his Pogo 8.50), it is another masterpiece. Simple, solid, light and still spacious, the Pogo 8.50 has redefined standards, revealing itself as an excellent boat in terms of performance, marine like few and convertible for Spartan cruising. Cult.

FIGARO SOLO

specifications: Beneteau; 9.14 x 3.25 m; 1990; Jean Marie Finot & Jean Berret

Developed for the Solitaire du Figaro regatta, the little Figaro Solo liked it from the start, thus starting a series that is still more than active today. From its earliest version it was characterized by a powerful sail on fractional rigging with flying rigging, resulting in a fast hull, strong synthetic foam sandwich with structural counter-molding and efficient weight distribution. Overall, a small masterpiece of 1990.

MUMM 30 / FARR 30

specs: Carrol Marine / Ovington; 9.42 x 3.08 m; 1995; Bruce Farr

It is, quite simply, the gem of world sailing on the small, adrenaline-fueled, unstoppable breakwater. It bears the name of a Champagne and is an absolute Cult. It is the Farr 30, best known in its commercial name, MUMM 30. Today perfect as a day sailer or for regattas to which it is really dedicated, it is a true sailing missile, as extreme as a track car and as fascinating as a great contemporary classic. A must for people who know how to sail.

FARR 31

specs: Artmare; 9.52 x 3.30 m; 1978; Bruce Farr

Another masterpiece bearing the signature of Bruce Farr, however, much older. A hull from the ‘early days’ of this great designer of ‘out of the chorus’ boats, beautiful and very fast. A Half Tonner IOR, even today the Farr 31 is a hull that knows her stuff and, in class, knows how to look good in racing. And indeed, not a few are seen. Remarkably, she was one of the first boats to plane with relative ease.
