This year’s VELA Cup Toscana at Marina Cala de’ Medici(May 23-25) is not to be missed because it is GdV’s VELA Cup Special Edition 50 and you and your boat cannot miss it. Special Edition 50 because this year the Sailing Newspaper is celebrating an important birthday: 50 years! There will be a big party throughout the weekend of the VELA Cup at Marina Cala de’ Medici, which starts with the regatta on Saturday morning and also includes the Special Edition 50 Sailor of the Year award ceremony. We explain why you really can’t miss it in 13 (jinx!) good reasons.
1. Polo Icon
For crews participating in the VELA Cup Toscana there is theexclusive VELA Cup Special Edition 50 polo shirt. In fact, for this occasion, a limited edition polo shirt has also been created, designed especially just for this leg. On the back it has the celebratory logo of the 50th anniversary of the Giornale della Vela, and it will be of the “VELA red” that distinguishes the logo of the GdV created in 1975 by the famous designer Bob Noorda. What’s more, for all crews, there is also a rich gift bag filled with gadgets offered by our partners that is handed out when registration is finalized.
2. Free mooring
Mooring at Marina Cala de’ Medici, one of the most modern and well-equipped in the Tyrrhenian Sea, is free for VELA Cup participants. If you want to stay for a few more days (or arrive a few days earlier), the marina offers a discount for VELA Cup participants.
3. Breathtaking route
The route of the regatta-which lasts a maximum of 4 hours-will take you to discover the Gulf of Castiglioncello, along the Costa degli Etruschi. You start in front of the waters of Marina Cala de’ Medici and, after turning the disengagement buoy, you head for the second buoy off Vada, a hamlet of Rosignano Solvay. For the third buoy, you return in a northerly direction, the point where the third buoy is placed is in front of the port of Chioma, mouth of the stream of the same name, after which you return in front of the Marina di Cala de’ Medici turning the disengagement buoy.
4. Regatta for all
Anyone can participate in the VELA Cup: any boat from three meters in length overall. There are no requirements other than those required by recreational sailing. You can participate in the Sport Boat grouping (Code O, spi, gennaker…) or Cruising Boat (white sails) Family crews, more “racers,” solo, very young, seniors: the VELA Cup is for everyone, and if your boat is over 25 years old, you also compete in the Classic Boat classification (read the next point).
5. Classic Boat? Take advantage of it!
If you have a Classic Boat (a boat more than 25 years old) there is not only an ad hoc ranking for you. At Cala de’ Medici-and only on this occasion-you have the option of requesting at the registration “desk” that on site (Friday, the day before the regatta, or Saturday afternoon after the regatta) an expert Classic Boat certifier from the Giornale della Vela (Journal of Sailing) come aboard and, evaluating the general condition of the boat, register it free of charge in the Classic Boat Register, issuing a certificate and plaque that will be sent to your home.
6. Don’t have a boat? Don’t worry, you can still participate!
As of this year, Seeking/Offering boarding (via Facebook) for the VELA Cup is active, including for the Tuscany leg at Marina Cala de’ Medici. But don’t despair, you can also find boarding at the dock.
7. The great festival of sailing
Once the regatta is over, ashore you take part in the Great Sailing Party for 50 years of GdV: it starts at 6:30 p.m. with the VELA Cup Toscana award ceremony, with prizes for (almost) everyone, refreshments, music and drinks. Then, from 8 p.m., get to know the greatest sailors at the Velista dell’Anno Special Edition 50 years GdV and find out who won the 2025 edition. At 9 p.m., cinema in the square with the screening of “No More Trouble” in the presence of director Tommaso Romanelli.
8. Sail with the Mylius
This year’s VELA Cup Toscana also features the Mylius Rendez Vous, the regatta reserved for boats from the prestigious Italian boatyard. Do you have a Mylius? There will be a special ranking for you with prizes dedicated to all Mylius owners. Don’t have a Mylius? This is your chance to see these beautiful boats up close. And who knows, you might be able to get invited aboard?
9. If you have an X-Yachts…
At VELA Cup Toscana there will also be a gathering of the X-Yacht Owners Association of all sizes and ages.
10. Celebrating the Vaurien
Not only cabin cruisers. At the VELA Cup Toscana in Marina Cala de’ Medici, the protagonists will also be the legendary Vaurien, the small boats that have shaped generations of sailors: lots of hulls and many young and old are expected. The Vaurien will also have a special ranking, as well as a “tailor-made” course. The Vaurien class for the occasion will provide some boats for those who want to test themselves at the VELA Cup.

11. Free boat check-up
The VELA Cup Toscana in Cala de’ Medici is an opportunity to have your boat “checked-up”: at the VELA Cup “desk” you can request a free check-up of mast, rigging and lines from the experts at CD Sails, who will board your boat and provide valuable advice on upgrading and optimizing your equipment.
12. There will be lots of you
It promises to be a crowded regatta. At 45 days there are already 38 boats entered: from the “big ones,” such as the Mylius 76 O2 and the 66 Schorch, to the “outliers” such as the Latini 52 Kito 1930 or the Rodman 42 Cheyenne, via “family” cruisers of such as Bavaria 40, C32, Beneteau Oceanis and Jeanneau Sun Odyssey. Classic boats such as Hallberg-Rassy 42, X-412, Grand Soleil MaxiOne. And of course, lots and lots of Vaurien.
13. The SAIL Cup-that’s two!
The day after the VELA Cup, it’s back to the sea with the Triton Cup, the second edition of the regatta to promote Natura 2000 marine and coastal sites, promoted by the LIFE-A-MAR NATURA 2000 project. Different name, same spirit as VELA Cup.
