The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, we have created a series of articles, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating, or of a specific “brand.” On the heels of the previous 24 articles (found at the bottom of this one), it is now the turn of 5 Scandinavian boats not to be underestimated. We are out of the ‘pop’ names, but that does not make them inferior boats. Here are 5 boats, then, of exception, hulls signed Sweden Yachts and IW-Varvet to watch out for, among the best to have ever left their respective yards.

5 exceptional hulls signed Sweden Yachts and IW-Varvet (from 9 to 14 meters)
Sweden Yachts and IW-Varvet are two Scandinavian entities that are not unfamiliar. So we are not talking about underdogs, but certainly, the two Swedes do not live on the lips of yachtsmen as much as other sister participants in Scandinavian shipbuilding. Still, they undoubtedly deserve their share of glory. So here are five exceptional hulls that came out of one, or the other, shipyard. Boats that are exceptional and conceived by big names, hulls that, even with their years, will still be able to make you dream (asking, by the way, even much less from your wallet…).
IW-31
specifications: IW-Varvet; 9.24 x 2.69 m; 1968-1985; #350; Sparkman & Stephens
Signed by the always masterful Sparkman & Stephens, with the IW-31 we are confronted with an exceptional 9.24-footer, a huge success of the Swedish IW-Varvet. Conceived in the late 1960s and remaining in production until the mid-1980s, the little 31-footer will become known as the big Half-Tonner in the early IOR period, garnering no small amount of praise from the public. Not for nothing, it will be produced in 350 examples. In terms of volume, the lines are slender, as is the beam narrow, making it a smooth hull on the water and fast, though cramped in interior space.
SWEDEN 36
specifications: Sweden Yachts; 11.00 x 3.66 m; 1984-1992; #74; Peter Norlin
As with many Scandinavian sister companies, the build quality of Sweden Yachts in the 1970s and 1980s is nothing short of proverbial. On the strength of precisely this superb quality, aided by a simple, streamlined design, the small Sweden 36, designed by Peter Norlin, soared in 1984. In short order, it became one of the yard’s greatest successes, with as many as 74 examples produced, Merit for a perfect balance between construction mastery and design.
IW-40
specifications: IW-Varvet; 12.10 x 3.50 m; 1975; Sparkman & Stephens
Big brother to the little 31, in 1975 IW-Varvet returned to recover the Sparkman & Stephens signature by creating the IW-40, S&S design #2186. Conceived for the discerning cruiser seeking the perfect balance between performance and comfort, she would soon prove to be a boat capable of meeting every need, as fast and streamlined as she was top quality, comfortable and elegant.
SWEDEN 41
specifications: Sweden Yachts; 12.50 x 3.89 m; 1981-1994; #39; Peter Norlin
Produced in as many as 39 examples, the Sweden 41 is Sweden Yachts’ workhorse of 1981. Signed by Peter Norlin, she immediately reveals herself as an extremely buoyant 12.5-meter, strong with water lines that are forerunners of many to come. What emerges is a highly regarded, elegant hull with a most pleasing pace.
SWEDEN 45
specifications: Sweden Yachts; 14.15 x 4.18 m; 2000; Peter Norlin / Jens Östmann
It is the dawn of the new millennium, and in keeping with tradition, house Sweden wants to prove that it does things right. And the new Peter Norlin / Jens Östmann combination fits the bill. Thus is born a 14-meter that wants to demonstrate all the savoir-faire of the brand. Flush deck, set-back beam, protected cockpit and powerful lines. This is the Sweden 45, a boat made to take on tough seas, but in all comfort. It is not oblivious to relaxation and the Mediterranean, though, and features one of the first folding swim platforms built into the transom. To say the least, very complete boat.
