Call to all sailing and sea enthusiasts: from Friday, May 23 to Sunday, May 25: the VELA Cup Tuscany is really not to be missed. It is aunique special edition because it is part of the weekend of the Grand 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Journal of Sailing., which includes the awarding of the Special Edition Sailor of the Year, with dozens of the greatest Italian sailors in history in attendance. Plus, the big regatta sea party doubles. On Sunday, May 25, there will be the Triton Cup 2025 – LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000. The party at sea will be truly unique. At Vela Cup Toscana there will be dozens and dozens of boats (to date already 50 confirmed entries). And there will be beautiful boats to admire at sea and on the dock. Like the hulls of the Mylius shipyard, the pride of Made in Italy that organizes the Mylius Rendez Vous here.

1 – Let’s celebrate 50 years of the Sailing Newspaper together.

The VELA Cup Toscana is the VELA Cup Special Edition 50 years GdV. Why? It’s quickly said: this year GdV celebrates its first 50 years, that’s right: half a century ago, in 1975, the first issue of the Journal of Sailing came out.

The VELA Cup Toscana scheduled for Saturday, May 24, is only one (very important) part of the big party that takes place ashore throughout the day. After the regatta and the awards ceremony, in fact, there is refreshments with drinks and music in the Marina Cala de’ Medici square, and then the big award night for the Velista of the Year 2025 Special Edition 50 years GdV begins.

Then in the beautiful plaza of the Cala de’ Medici Marina, at 9 p.m. there will be a screening of the most-watched and award-winning sea sailing film of 2025, the thrilling “No More Trouble – What Remains of a Storm” by Tommaso Romanelli, who will be in attendance. Full details on the Great Sailing Festival can be found here.

Special Polo 50 Years Sailing Newspaper

Unique, unrepeatable, limited edition. Only boats and crews participating in the VELA Cup Toscana will receive – in addition to the gift bag with all the gadgets offered by our partners – the “Limited Edition” Celebration Polo created to celebrate 50 years of the Giornale della Vela. It will not be found for sale and will not be replicated. Never again.

2 – VELA Cup Tuscany 2025

In less than two months, May 23-25 (regattas 24 and 25) is the second leg of Italy’s busiest regatta circuit, the VELA Cup, with the leg taking place in Tuscany, on the Etruscan Coast.

By the end of May there is now practically summer weather, ideal for treating yourself to a weekend of sailing. And what better place than the Etruscan Coast to experience it, with crystal-clear waters and enchanting coves-a true paradise for sailors and those who love the sea. The regatta lasts no more than four hours. Back at the dock (mooring is free), the party we just told you about begins.

Useful information for participating

Each leg of the VELA Cup is open to all types of boats from 3 meters in length overall and no specific requirements other than those for recreational sailing are required. From dinghies to bluewater, from cruising boats with family crews to more “pulled” boats, from Classic Boats to full-carbon racers: with only one “diktat.” That of having fun and enjoying the course and the surrounding beauty.

Everyone knows by now, one of the ingredients that makes each leg of the VELA Cup unique is the Saturday prize-giving, held in the afternoon after the conclusion of the regatta at Marina Cala de’ Medici. And remember: it’s not just who goes best at sea that wins, because with the raffle prizes offered by our partners , (almost) everyone wins! The novelty this year is that each boat competes on a level playing field with its own personalized fee. So even those who start out beaten on paper can win.

The course of the VELA Cup Tuscany

The VELA Cup Toscana 2025 starts in front of the waters of Marina Cala de’ Medici and points, after turning the disengagement buoy, to the second buoy off Vada, a hamlet of Rosignano Solvay. For the third buoy, the point where the third buoy is positioned is in front of the Chioma harbor, mouth of the stream of the same name, after which it returns in front of the Marina di Cala de’ Medici turning the disengagement buoy.

There is the Mylius Rendez Vous and the most beautiful boats

This year VELA Cup Toscana is hosting an event within the event, the gathering of boats from the “made in Italy” Mylius shipyard, considered among the most beautiful and high-performance boats in the world. The Mylius Rendez Vous will feature such famous hulls as the 80-foot Twin Soul B, the Mylius 65 Oscar 3, as many as three Mylius 60s and many other prestigious models.

For owners of boats from the prestigious X- Yachts shipyard, there will also be one more reason to participate in the VELA Cup Toscana: models from all eras will gather in Cala de’ Medici.

But that’s not all, there will also be dozens of “ClassicBoats,” those at least 25 years old that will be able to compete on equal terms.

Below you can sign up now with your Classic Boat and X-Yacht (or just your boat).

Weekend at sea. Sunday, May 25 is the Triton Cup 2025

The celebration over the weekend of May 23-25 does not end with Saturday, May 24. On Sunday, in fact, it’s back on the water for the Triton Cup 2025 – LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000, with the same course as the VELA Cup on the previous day.

The VELA Cup doubles up on the occasion of the Tuscany leg, with a second regatta-organized in collaboration with Triton Research and Life A-Mar Natura2000-that has a clear goal: to raise awareness of the importance of marine biodiversity and the conservation of endangered habitats and species found in Natura2000 Network protected areas. Discover Natura2000 Network areas around you by downloading theAMAR Sea LIFE app on Android or iOS.

3 – An idea for a boating vacation

The nerve center of the very rich VELA Cup Toscana weekend is the Marina Cala de’ Medici between Rosignano Solvay Castiglioncello (in red in the map above), which is located in the center of Tuscany, on a picturesque stretch of coastline in the heart of the Etruscan Coast. From here it is very convenient to take a cruise to the most beautiful islands in the area, such as Gorgona, Capraia, or Elba, since they are all less than 50 nautical miles away.

Starting from Livorno, which combines history, culture and natural beauty, and is definitely worth a stop. Arriving from the sea, it is possible to explore the Fortezza Vecchia, an imposing 16th-century structure that dominates the entrance to the port. Livorno is famous for its charming canals, such as those in the Venezia Nuova district, overlooked by ancient palaces, historic wine cellars, and Europe’s widest bridge, Piazza della Repubblica.

Then in the immediate vicinity of Marina Cala de’ Medici are Quercianella and Castiglioncello, two gems of the Etruscan Coast. The village of Castiglioncello is famous for its protected beaches, quiet coves, and red cliffs plunging into the sea. The Quercetano Bay is a perfect place for relaxation or activities such as sailing and windsurfing, but over the years it has also been a popular location for actors and jet-setters.

Among the places to visit as you continue south along this beautiful coast are definitely San Vincenzo, which is also a lively center with stores, restaurants, and various summer events that enliven the waterfront, and the Gulf of Baratti, with its historic Etruscan necropolis at Populonia and wonderful beaches.

On the other side of the promontory is Piombino (known toElba lovers), and continuing on we find another stretch of coastline extremely popular both for its beaches and for its natural beauty and nightlife-we point out the town of Follonica above all-that ends with Punta Ala.

LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000 is a European project with LIFE funding program, which aims to enhance and protect marine and coastal Natura 2000 sites by actively involving sea users. The initiative aims to raise awareness among sailors, divers, fishermen and other frequenters about protected areas and their importance by promoting environmentally sustainable behavior in their management. The project also strives to encourage active citizenship through activities to learn about and monitor the marine environment, fostering targeted training for managers and users. Effective communication about the values and benefits of these protected areas is another key objective, to improve their recognition and protection. Thanks also to Citizen Science activities, LIFE A-MAR NATURA2000 aims to increase collective commitment to the conservation of these ecosystems, making the sea a heritage to be known and defended.
