A Ziggurat 916, iconic CPR hull that populated the Italian IOR

The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and/or a specific “brand.” Exploring different hulls, between designers and shipyards, it is now the turn to look at 5 boats signed by two cult shipyards of Italy: Canados and CPR..

Canados and CPR, 5 exceptional hulls from two cult Italian shipyards

On one side, Canados, a shipyard with a centuries-old strong tradition of shipwrights. On the other, C.P.R., the other Roman shipyard that has managed to popularize Italian sailing in the last century. Two separate realities but united by a production that, in its own way, has managed to become cult, with exceptional hulls derived from the great One-Offs of their time. Derived from the little Ziggurat to the legendary Filo da Torcere, here are 5 used production boats that are a must-know.

Twine, from which the Canados 37 will be born.

ZIGGURAT 916

specifications: 9.16 x 3.02 m; 1977-1989; Andrea Vallicelli

In the mid-1970s three young designers and friends-Andrea Vallicelli, Vittorio Mariani and Nicola Sironi-designed a small Half Tonner destined to change the Italian design scene forever. It is the Ziggurat, a future icon of Italian sailing. Staged IOR as a Half Tonner, it will immediately demonstrate its excellent qualities and, inevitably, it will also be immediately reproposed in series. It was CPR that grabbed the exclusive, giving birth to the Ziggurat 916, the racing-cruising version, an exceptional cabin cruiser, beautiful and fast, that would depopulate in the Bel Paese. It was made available either ready ‘at the buoy,’ as a ‘shell to be fitted out,’ or in kit form to be ‘built.’ An incredible success.

ZIGGURAT 995

specifications: 9.95 x 3.30 m; 1981; Andrea Vallicelli

Given the incredible success of the 916, with the beginning of the 1980s CPR decided to replicate, offering a second version, ‘pantographed’ in a big way. Thus was born the Ziggurat 995, which Vallicelli also put his hand to, a hull capable of

retain all the features of the smaller model, but increase the interior volumes. It will be another success for the Roman shipyard.

CANADOS 33

specifications: 10.08 x 3.20 m; 1977; Andrea Vallicelli

Argento Vivo, designed by Vallicelli, will soon turn out as a highly successful Three Quarter Tonner, a one-off protagonist of many regattas in the Mediterranean season. Canados, on the strength of the lesson provided by CPR, seizes the opportunity and offers a production version. Thus was born the Canados 33, a fast and fun cruiser-racer, another Italian cult of pleasure sailing.

Oneiros – Canados 33

CANADOS 37

specifications: 11.3 x 3.63 m; 1979; Andrea Vallicelli

The Canados 33 reveals the winning formula to the yard. And team that wins-when Filo da Torcere becomes One Tonner world champion, the deal is already in the air. The signature is always Vallicelli’s, and the answer is simple: again, a production hull will be provided for the general public. Thus was born the highly acclaimed Canados 37.

Canados 37

CANADOS 44

specifications: 13.40 x 4.14 m; 1981; Violati & Partners

With the 1980s Canados changes the signature but not the music. Violati & Partners had developed prototypes for the Admiral’s Cup that were nothing short of good, and the Lazio shipyard seized the opportunity. Thus was born the Canados 44, a hull less talked about than its predecessors but no worse regarded. She will be available in two versions, with center or standard cockpit, and will prove to be a performance boat, fast upwind and strong with a wide beam and balanced leaps. The freeboard is high, the deckhouse low, wedged into the deck, and the deck is clear, with the rigging well back in the cockpit.
