The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and/or a specific “brand.” Exploring different hulls, between designers and yards, it is now our turn to look at boats signed by a legendary British duo, Camper & Nicholson: here are 5 of the most relevant production Classic Boats signed by the duo.

Camper & Nicholson, 5 series hulls from 9 to 12.7 meters

Camper and Nicholson, from which hulls such as the Gipsy Moth IV, several America’s Cups and hulls for Fasntet were born, is a reality that, contrary to what we are wont to explore, has its roots in much earlier times. Founded in 1782 by Francis Calense Amos, the shipyard in fact began as a business devoted to renovation, only to become properly manufacturing in 1809, with the takeover of William Camper, who inherited the property in 1824. It would not be until 1842, however, that the Nicholson name would join the ranks, with Benjamin Nicholson stepping into the role of apprentice. By 1855 he will be down in charge of most of the projects. We will have to wait until 1875, however, to see the two names registered together: ‘Camper & Nicholson’ is born, and the rest will be legend…

NICHOLSON 30 ½ TON

specifications: 9.14 x 3.12 m; 1977; #28; Ron Holland

In the late 1970s Camper & Nicholson wants to prove the quality of its hulls even on the ‘smaller’ segments. Thus it is the turn of the IOR Half Tonner class, to which the yard already offers the highly regarded 303, whose potential can be taken further, however. The new model will see the signature of Ron Holland. Thus was born the Nicholson 30 Half Ton. Designed to dominate among the buoys, it does not fail to live up to its goal, soon revealing itself as a hull that is yes small, but agile and fast. It will be built in 28 examples.

BRIGAND 9.5

specifications: 9.38 x 3.20 m; 1972; #N/A; Camper & Nicholson

In the early 1970s, the Roman Cima shipyards brought to life a hull that has remained highly appreciated in Italy. It is the Brigand, a design signed Camper & Nicholson. Designed by the English duo, it would in fact prove to be a pleasant hull characterized by remarkable safety and course stability, qualities that made it particularly appreciated, although not particularly fast. Notable are the forward momentum and the upright mirrored stern, on which the cantilever rudder is installed.

NICHOLSON 35

specifications: 10.74 x 3.18 m; 1971-1985; #200; Ray Wall

The early 1970s saw the birth of one of the most classic British bluewater boats of the period. It is the Nicholson 35, signed by the in-house team the yard and Ray Wall. A must for the British brand. Built in more than 200 examples, it is a design that prioritizes safety and seamanship over speed and pace, all to the benefit of the comfort of life on board. The beam is narrow, the keel semi-long, and the result results in a true classic, an elegant boat to go anywhere.

NICHOLSON 39

specifications: 11.89 x 3.51 m; 1975; #63; Ray Wall

Following the success of hulls such as the Nicholson 42, an unusual hull was born in 1975 but a spokesman for a growing trend. Built in a total of 63 examples, this is a center-cockpit ketch with distinctive deck lines, designed in the constant search for comfort and safety, elements placed, here, above all other parameters. Marinity and interior volumes thus dictate its conceptual canons, offering a boat that, first and foremost, is designed to sail anywhere. The numbers will prove its qualities: appreciated despite being off-trend.

NICHOLSON 42

specifications: 12.75 x 3.71 m; 1974; #14; Ray Wall

Riding the wave of mid-1970s bluewater trends, an unusual but forerunner hull of trends to come was born with the Nicholson 42. The year is 1974 and Raymond Wall designs the Nicholson 42, a 12.7-meter designed for serene sailing, oblivious to racing and the sacrifices of comfort it entails. It will be produced in just 14 examples, but it is a boat that is different from the norm, designed exclusively for sailing, and the market will show that it has understood. Not even a year later, in fact, the trend will be set, paving the way for models that are indeed smaller, but far more widely successful.
