The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding in alphabetical order, it is now our turn to look at the hulls of the legendary Danish shipyard, X-Yachts: here are 5 of the most relevant Classic Boats produced by the shipyard.

X-Yachts, 5 exceptional hulls from 9 to 14 meters

X-Yachts was born in 1979, but found its foundation in a period just before that, strong from the early collaborations between Birger Hansen and the Jeppesen brothers, Lars and Niels. Collaborations born between friends in the first place, all daughters of skills learned in related fields. Thus were born the first boats, great successes, until the launching of a small masterpiece. It is the X-79, cornerstone for the legend… From the small 7 meters on, only great hulls(Discover the history of X-Yachts here)…

The legendary X79, the hull that started it all

X-99

specifications: 9.96 x 2.95 m; 1985-2005; #605; Niels Jeppesen

The year is 1985 and, in yet another masterstroke, Neil Jeppesen churns out a creature destined for absolute success. It is the X-99, a hull created to be the necessary evolutionary step to the X-79, but ready to prove a flawless ‘machine’. Sold in 100 units before production even started, it will reach the 605 mark, becoming not only the first X to be recognized by ISAF as a class in its own right, but also the yard’s most widely successful hull. In short, it is a sacred monster, a little outlier that is fast, fun and competitive like few other hulls.

X-3/4 TON

specifications: 9.98 x 3.38 m; 1984-1990; #84; Niels Jeppesen

The hull lines are those of the X-102. Everything else, however, changes. The centreboard, the rudder, as well as the deck and the sail plan are entirely redesigned, resulting in a hull that, yes, is completely different from its predecessor. The X-3/4 Ton is in fact a machine optimized for racing and, as the name forewarns, is designed for the Three Quarter Ton Cup (Kiel, 1984). As good evidence of its design goodness, as many as 84 examples will be launched in just six years.

IMX-38

specifications: 11.41 x 3.68 m; 1992-2000; #92; Niels Jeppesen

Having become iconic among offshore monotypes, the IMX-38 is a design as aggressive as it is intelligent. Conceived purely for racing, this is yet another masterpiece by Jeppesen, an exceptional hull from her first launch, immediately able to prove her worth under the new IMS formula. Produced in 92 examples over 8 years, she is not only a bolide, but also concretely beautiful.

IMX-40

specifications: 12.10 x 3.80 m; 2000-2004; #99; Niels Jeppesen

If the IMX-38 was born to be a beast among buoys, the same is true of its 2000 replacement, the IMX-40. It is yet another icing on the cake for X-Yachts, and with its 99 examples produced in just four years, the numbers speak volumes. Designed to rout everything in IMS, she is a hull capable of winning, and that she does, immediately winning the European championships and making up 2/3 of the Spanish team at the Sardinia Cup. The boat itself is little less than a bolide: carbon boom, mast and rudder, and a trump card: the introduction of an innovative system for adjusting the backstay. In short, a missile, a worthy successor to the IMX-38.

X-452

specifications: 13.92 x 4.25 m; 1987-1991; Niels Jeppesen

In the second half of the 1980s X-Yachts wants to offer the market the most competitive Cruiser-Racer, the best hull in the intergo segment. To accomplish this, it offers a 45-footer with splendid lines, fast and marine like few others. To crown it all, a transom that is nothing short of gorgeous. It is the X-452, first launched in 1987: an exceptional hull.
