The 50th anniversary of the Sailing Newspaper

A sensational straorzata in the waters of Genoa in March 1973, immortalized above, is the spark that gave birth, 50 years ago, to the Giornale della Vela. We rediscovered these old, forgotten images as we are working, combing through historical archives to prepare for the 50-year anniversary of this newspaper, the Giornale della Vela, which was born in July 1975. Read the full story.

Who’s in charge of sailing in Italy

After a “phone call” election, the third term of Italian Sailing Federation president Francesco Ettorre has officially begun. We unveil his entire team, new entries, close collaborators and all the presidents of the IVF “regions” in Italy. What are the challenges they will face in the four-year period 2025-2028 for sailing that is truly within everyone’s reach.

Special Used and Bargains

Why the right time to buy a used or pre-owned boat is now, what the 50 used boat queens are, how to calculate a boat’s value over time, what to check on board, the best professionals to turn to. Welcome aboard our “anti-scam” guide.

DERIVES – Small to become big

All the greatest sailors come from the world of dinghies, and it is no coincidence. With the testimony of champion Francesca Clapcich, we tell you how the “little ones” help you develop sensitivity, body balance and understand the boat’s reactions to every adjustment and shift. We also point you to what we think are the six best open boats to hone your technique and become better sailors on any boat: even cruising.

UNVEILED – 17 supernovas from 7.60 to 27.07 m

We beat the Düsseldorf boat show and shipyards on the hunt for the most interesting new boats just launched and that we will see in 2025. We have chosen 17 for you (in defiance of superstition!) and with these we tell you all about the latest market trends in design, solutions, types. From small and sporty to weekender, from catamarans to super bluewater.

The cruise of future champions

1975. Seven 15-year-olds from the Circolo Italia competitive team, just out of school, set off on an adventure. It is their first cruise without parents, from Naples to Santa Margherita Ligure, 330 miles up the Tyrrhenian Sea. Their last names are de Angelis, Signorini, Perrone Capano, Mango, Perriello Zampelli, Berardinone, Magri. They do not yet know what will become of their lives “when they grow up,” and more importantly, they do not know that they will become sailing champions. A story of teenagers at their first sailing maturity test, the tale of how sailing was done 50 years ago. But also an affirmation of the excellence of the Neapolitan school, where people went out in training from October to May under the loving and stern gaze of talent discoverer Gennarino. A school of sailing but also of life. It was 1975.

CAT VS MONO

The ultimate answer to the fateful question: better a catamaran or a monohull for cruising? We compared the two boats and found that…

Before going into the water WHAT TO DO | HOW MUCH DOES IT COST | IN HOW MUCH TIME.

Spring. It’s time to bring your boat out of its winter hibernation: if the boatyard takes care of the careening, there are plenty of jobs that every boat owner can do on his own while saving money. We asked our own Luigi Gallerani, who has been living aboard his Elan E3 for three years, to reveal what they are and produce an estimate of the actual DIY costs and time needed to prepare a 12-meter boat for sailing.

Eight remote islands to feel like EXPLORERS of the third millennium

To what extent does going on vacation also mean ‘getting lost in the world? For those who love sailing, sailing and the sea, exploring even by heading a few miles from home – is a necessity. Despite the hyper-connected world in which we live, there are still lands, indeed islands, waiting to be unveiled. Reach them in the meantime with us in these pages and then who knows?

The Accessories – 13 gadgets to keep on board that (maybe) you never thought of

Ideas, accessories, tech products you don’t expect. We tell you about them in these four pages. Get ready to buy them for the upcoming season!

Sailing improves business

We were on board during a “Team Sailing” session at a leg of the VELA Cup with TopActive experts discovering how sailing is the ideal means of increasing a company’s performance, improving and enhancing the potential of a working team.

In Practice – Final Pre-mooring Checklist.

The Yacht Safety Management System, the sail and motor boat safety protocol devised by SoloSailor Andrea Lodolo, allows for increased safety for boaters. In past issues we have seen how to customize and validate checklists, and we have gone into detail about pre-departure checks. Let’s look in this article at the pre-arrival checklists proposed by Lodolo that will not only allow us to arrive safely in port but also to gain valuable time for well-deserved rest.

The Regattas – Welcome back Admiral’s!

From July 17-31 in Cowes, the Admiral’s Cup, the only true World Championship in team offshore sailing, returns after 20 years. The fleet will be of the highest level and there is also an Italian team in the running. Decisive will be the Fastnet.
