Running between Antigua and Guadeloupe, in the Caribbean Sea, is one of the most spectacular regattas being raced in the world, the RORC Caribbean 600, famous for its 600-plus mile course among the islands of the archipelago, always swept by a robust Trade Wind seasoned with mild temperatures. One of the world’s dream offshore races, it is almost always windy and sun-kissed, and once again this year it gathered an excellent fleet.
Lucky wins in real, tough regatta
There were 65 boats at the start, ,a after 48 hours of racing there are some excellent retirements, which does not smile on Italian sailing. Out of action due to technical problems are both Andrea Recordati’s Wally 93 Bullitt and the Vismara Mills 62 Leapd&Bound owned by French owner Philippe Blanpain but with an all-Italian crew. A total of 15 boats retired after the first two days of racing, with the strong wind conditions of this first part marking the fleet.
Real-time victory has already been awarded to Lucky, Juan K 27m, which closed the course in less than 48 hours by averaging well over 300 miles in 24 hours: on board Italian sailor and rigger Daniele Raddavero. At the moment one of the boats also credited for victory in IRC overall is the VOR 70 Tchuss, which is a few dozen miles from the finish line. Still in the running for Italy is Aldo Fumagalli’s trimaran Rapido 53 Picomole, currently fourth among multihulls, 230 miles from the finish line.
