Swan 43

The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Of course, 5 hulls, never more than in this context, becomes reductive. Below, however, here are 5 of the most relevant models produced by Nautor Swan (one per decade-’60-’90-and an extra).

Swan, 5 exceptional hulls from 13 to 20 meters

The birth of one of the most emblazoned shipyards in history takes off in 1966, from the meeting between Pekka Koskenkyla and Rod Stephens. We are in Pietarsaari, Gulf of Bothia. Thus was born an incredible 36-footer, produced in as many as 90 examples starting in 1967. It is the Swan 36, a huge success that will lay the foundation for the Nautor Swan legend. This would be followed by such outstanding designs as the Swan 40, 37 and 44, and then by the Swan 47, 38 e Swan 57 in the following decade…

Swan 43

specifications: 13.04 x 3.56 m; 1967-1982; #67; Sparkman & Stephens

The apotheosis of 1960s style and class, the Swan 43 is simply a legend. Built in 67 examples, she is the S&S masterpiece of the decade (design #1973), strong with deep soaring, beam already leaning toward abundant and still classic lines. Powerful in the waves, marine and fast, she is simply ‘the boat’ of the 1960s by definition. The transom and deck plan are faultless and iconic, with a deckhouse unique and no longer replicated on any other Swan.

Swan 48

specifications: 14.6 x 4.15 m; 1971-1975; #46; Sparkman & Stephens

With the Swan 48 (project #2079), the S&S/Nautor pair enters a new realm. We are no longer in the early days, the 1960s are behind us, and design philosophies are changing. And the 48′ proves it right away: it is the first Swan to introduce the anvil deckhouse, never again abandoned in the yard’s entire production. The yard’s sixth design, it will be produced in 46 examples. It is an elegant, marine and performance hull. Designed to compete under early IOR ratings, signed S&S, it need not even be mentioned that she ran like a train. Pleasing to the eye as well as to the helm.

Swan 65

specifications: 19.68 x 4.96 m; 1971-1989; #41; Sparkman & Stephens

The iconic hull of an entire era, the Swan 65 (design #2110) is the shipyard’s hull that, more than any other, by merit ascends to the Olympus of sailing. Elegant, high-performance and with an unbeatable pedigree, she was produced in no fewer than 41 examples, mainly ketch-rigged, immediately becoming the standard for every flagship to come. Yet another Sparkman & Stephens masterpiece, excellent for cruising to this day, she sails in any condition. In 1973 he won the first Whitbread Round the World Race, the round-the-world crewed race. Absolute icon.

Swan 651

specifications: 20.02 x 5.33 m; 1982-1991; #19; German Frers

1980s. In Nautor we no longer find S&S but Frers, the Argentine master. And from his pen come incredible hulls. Among them, one masterpiece towers above others: the Swan 651, an iconic cruiser-racer, as elegant as she is marine, designed to Whitbread and Grand Prix Maxi standards. Safe, comfortable and high-performing, she is a boat that knows her stuff, proving her full pedigree even among the buoys. She is a cult among the Argentine’s designs, and, today, she is still as good as she was in her day.

1990s, the Nautor – Frers pair returned to work and sealed a small major achievement: they brought out the Swan 68, a cruiser-racer of the finest pedigree. Sleek lines, classic flush deck “a la Swan,” semi-custom interior, and class to spare. Not to mention the performance, which is excellent. It will sell 24 units, no small numbers when we are talking about more than 20 meters out all. A must.
