The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding in alphabetical order, then, it is now the turn of Se.Ri.Gi and its Solaris: below are 5 of the most relevant models produced by the shipyard.

Se.Ri.Gi / Solaris, 5 exceptional hulls from 12 to 17 meters

Aquileia, 1974: a small reality was born that was destined to become a cult. It is Se.Ri.Gi -today Solaris Yachts. Initially engaged in outfitting other people’s projects and productions, the shipyard’s build quality and attention to detail immediately become proverbial, causing a stir. The spotlight shines and Se.Ri.Gi starts its own production. The Solaris 37 (Frans Maas) and Solaris 47 (Sparkman & Stephens) are born. (If you want to know more. find the history of the shipyard HERE ).

Solaris 39

specifications: 12.02 x 3.75 m; 1977 (37); 1981(39); Frans Maas

Frans Maas designs a small 37-footer, a fast but still improvable boat. Se.Ri.Gi, looking for a first hull to launch, gets in touch with the Dutchman and together they give birth to the Solaris 37, immediately proverbial for pace and quality. In 1981, the pair returned to the project, giving birth to the Solaris 39, an improved hull, now more refined in lines and comfortable in interiors. It would become an evergreen, synonymous with performance and safety, as well as gaining fame thanks to the book ‘Naufragio,’ by journalist Piero Ottone, who beached his 39′ along the Moroccan coast.

Solaris 47

specs: 14.38 x 4.00 m; 1979; Sparkman & Stephens In the late 1970s, a young designer destined to scale the heights of world design worked at the New York firm Sparkman & Stephens: he was German Frers. Concurrently, the newly formed Se.Ri.Gi commissioned a fast but comfortable 47-footer, a performance-cruiser ante-litteram. Thus was born the Solaris 47, an unusual hull with a peculiar deckhouse and particularly fast once in the water. Frers’ hand is already evident; the interior is a masterpiece of cabinet-making. She will become a small cult.

Solaris ONE

specs: 14.79 x 4.21 m; 1984; Doug Peterson

The early 1980s saw Peterson’s signature appear in tandem with the shipyard’s name. And change, with him, the design direction. No longer performance cruisers, but true bluewater, fast though, a la Mediterranea. Thus was born the Solari One, produced in about 20 examples and a test bed for the wizard Doug as well. For once, the latter concedes nothing to IOR regulations, he allows himself a free hand, thus giving birth to an original hull, intended for a restricted audience, certainly, but one that more than anything else knows how to appreciate a hull made, first and foremost, to sail, anywhere.

Solaris 57 (CC)

specs: 17.20 x 4.70 m; 1992; Doug Peterson

1992: Se.Ri.Gi launches a small series, but a great boat on the market. The lines are elegant, the cockpit is available in dual options, center or stern, and the quality impeccable. It is the Solaris 57, a 17.2-meter designed by Doug Peterson and, peculiarly, featuring two distinct sterns, depending on the version. Straight stern, if CC, reverse stern, if standard cockpit. She will be particularly marine and primarily devoted to comfort, with refined interiors and excellent craftsmanship-a fine hull with a classic flavor. A rare treat.

Solaris 59

specifications: 17.90 x 4.85 m; 1999; Doug Peterson

The collaboration with Doug Peterson proceeds fruitfully and, in ’99, Se.Ri.Gi launches an ocean cruiser with particularly elegant lines. It is the Solaris 59, a pleasant hull with powerful volumes and clean lines designed specifically for offshore sailing. The deck is rational, the rig designed to be tackled short-handed, and the central cockpit enhances safety. It is an unexpected bluewater, but not to be underestimated, on the contrary.
