We are less than three months away from the first leg of the VELA Cup, it will take place at the Marina di Chiavari Calata Ovest in Liguria May 2-4. Here are a few answers to your questions that have come to us in recent months about the regatta/sailing circuit organized by the Journal of Sailing.

Any sailing boat is eligible for the VELA Cup

Really any sailboat can participate in the VELA Cup?

Yes. The event is open to all sailboats over three meters in overall length: monohull and multihull, cabin cruiser or open, cruising and racing, with no age limitation and no use of tonnage certificates. The only important thing is that the boat be in compliance with the prescribed safety equipment and in order to be on the sea.

If we are a makeshift crew on a makeshift boat?

Yes, you can participate. Welcome to one of those few regattas where sailboats and sailors of all kinds are allowed. Also, should you lack crew to participate and you are unable to pull anyone in from the dock, there are several options to consider for making new friends and having crew, feel free to email us at velacup@velafestival.com

I don’t know the rules and have never participated in a regatta, how do I do it?

Quiet. There are no complicated regatta rules, but we sail in compliance with the regulations on collisions at sea (NIPAM), that is, following the International Regulations to Prevent Collisions at Sea (COLREG 1972). The rules we use every day to sail, specifically: Boats sailing starboard tack will always take precedence over those sailing port tack. A boat sailing upwind of another shall always keep clear of the downwind boat.

I have a racing boat and a crew of experienced sailors, will we have fun too?

Of course! If you have the soul of a racer and competitive crew, we are sure you will find bread for your teeth, you are not alone and you only need to participate in the Sport boat category to find yourself competing with other boats participating to win. In past editions there have been many owners who have participated with racing boats and everyone has been able to take away some satisfaction.

What is the route like and how long does the event last?

Each leg of the VELA Cup will have its own evocative coastal route, determined by the Sailing Notice or Notice of Race. The route will be explained to all participants and is of a maximum duration of four hours. A course within everyone’s reach, between buoys and islands, to be done safely and without obstacles or hidden “traps.”

I come from outside with my boat, will I have to pay for the mooring?

On the day of the regatta, mooring for all competitors’ boats is included in the entry fee (subject to availability). A classic is: participate in the event and then enjoy a weekend with friends and family sailing in some of the most beautiful places in Italy

Who are the “regulars” of the VELA Cup?

Simple, everyone! From “Sunday sailors” to great ocean skippers! From Vincenzo Onorato to Tommaso Chieffi, via Mauro Pelaschier and Andrea Mura, there are plenty of super sailors (and super boats) who have made the VELA Cup.

Vento di Sardegna also participated in the VELA Cup
