Najad 330

The landscape relating to Classic Bo ats-that is, production boats over 25 years old and launched since 1967-is a vast and ever-expanding one, made up of hulls of all shapes and sizes and, perhaps, not as easily “navigable” as one would often like. In light of this, in addition to our sections on Historic Classic Boats and Your Classic Boats, a new series of articles is born, aimed, boatyard by boatyard, at exploring 5 exceptional hulls, projects fundamental to the evolution of boating and of the “brand” itself. Proceeding in alphabetical order, then, it is the turn of Najad Yachts, of which, below, 5 of the most relevant models ever produced.

Najad, 5 exceptional hulls from 10 to 15 meters

Founded in 1971 on the island of Orust, Sweden, Najad Yachts was established to carry on the local shipbuilding tradition, dating back as far as the 12th century. Of course, being born at the same time as the fiberglass boom, the idea was never to continue in the footsteps of the classic. A builder, always, of exceptional bluewater, its line-up demonstrates this well, with more than 2,000 hulls launched and an outstanding portfolio. Here are five of his most notable hulls over 25 years old….

Najad 370

Najad 330

specifications: 10.00 x 3.40 m; 1993-1996; Thorwald Karlsson

Traditionally Scandinavian, the Najad 330 is a compact bluewater, 10-meter cruiser that, in 1993, knew how to offer itself as the ‘small-big’ option for those looking for a hull to go anywhere safely. Marine and comfortable, voluminous but manageable, it is fully a child of the Nordic school, with a well-protected cockpit, high freeboard and raised deckhouse to offer maximum breathing room for the interior. In short, a 33-footer for cruising with the comforts of a 38′.

Najad 373

specifications: 11.30 x 3.65 m; 1999-2005; Judel/Vrolijk

The look is that of the classic Nordic bluewater, with protected cockpit and wide, descending step stern, and the spirit is the same: that wanting to be a safe, marine boat. With the 373 you have, however, the signature of Judel & Vrolijk, who do not know how to desist from designing a hull that also walks, despite the fact that, by definition, it must be, first and foremost, deeply marine, comfortable and strong with top finishes. A cruiser is born to go anywhere, without too many worries.

Najad 390

specifications: 11.75 x 3.50 m; 1984-1995; Thorwald Karlsson

In the 1980s, those looking for a Blue Water had two main options: Najad or Hallberg Rassy. In the case of the former, ’84 saw the launching of her Najad 390, ranking her as a major bluewater builder. For that matter, the hull is particularly successful, the Nordic look and more graceful deckhouse than other models from the yard make it a cult favorite, and the construction and finish are proverbial sturdy. Long-lived boat, in production from 1984 to 1995.

Najad 460

specifications: 13.95 x 4.28 m; 2000-N/A; Judel/Vrolijk

High freeboards, central cockpits, serene sailing and powerful hulls. Tradition, in this sense, is not lacking at Najad and, indeed, perhaps found its zenith in 2000, with the Najad 460, a little jewel signed Judel & Vrolijk. Spacious, marine, pleasant, takes anywhere, anytime. Worth considering, if only to fantasize about….

Najad 490

specifications: 15.00 x 4.50 m; 1997-2007; Judel/Vrolijk + Eric Segerlind

In 1997 Najad introduced its new bluewater, the 15-meter Najad 490. Compared to what came before, it is a step beyond. The concept is simple, the recipe easy: it is a comfortable, safe cruiser designed to go anywhere and designed specifically for long crossings. A boat that, compared to paper, delivers on all its promises. The Judel/Vorlijk – Eric Segerlind pairing, in a nutshell, pays off, signing a hull that knows its stuff and is appreciable even almost 30 years after her first launch.
