In this article we celebrate all the winners of the 2024 edition of the VELA Cup (because really, as proven by the facts, at the regatta/festival circuit organized by the Sailing Newspaper anyone can win!) and we also take the opportunity to give you a brief summary of the rules for the 2025 VELA Cup edition(all the stages here).
The rules of 2025
We would like to remind you that any sailboat over three meters in length is allowed to participate in the VELA Cup and that, owners, when registering, will have to choose in which category to have their boat participate: Cruising Boat with only white sails, that is, only inferred sails (mainsail and jib/genoa) and Sport Boat in which all sails are allowed. Please note: there will be two separate rankings depending on the category of participation. Within each category, boats are then divided into classes according to length and awarded accordingly. In this article we explain in detail how the divisions and rankings work for this 2025 edition.
The special category of Classic Boats again this year deserves a separate discussion and will be featured in a special ranking, we are keen to emphasize boats over 25 years old and you can find the in-depth discussion of the participation categories here.
For those who want to know more about the big news of 2025, we also leave you with the article on the new secret rating system proposed by the Journal of Sailing that allows all participating boats to be compensated so that they compete on equal terms.
After this overview of the VELA Cup 2025, let us now look at last year’s winners.
2024 WINNERS
Sailing Cup Liguria
The leg in Liguria, at Marina di Chiavari – Calata Ovest, last year’s first, was characterized by a light wind: despite this, there was a great battle for victory among the fiercest boats and, in the end, they were rewarded.
Leg Winner, meaning overall winner of the leg, Hellcat, the Farr 31 of Leporatti – Valerio .
The first to cross the finish line in uncompensated time was Azzurro, Bruno Veronesi’s Swan 78, which was also first among the Cruising Boats since it was racing with white sails. Finally, second overall but first among the Sport Boats was Goose, the ICE 52RS of Maria Ingrid Torres Munoz. For all the other winners of this stage, and for detailed rankings, we refer you to this article.
